Greetings Westwood Parents!
I hope this finds you all staying safe and healthy. While none of us would wish for these current circumstances, it is important to look for the opportunities that are being presented to us right now. The extra time at home might provide some great moments to help our children strengthen some of their behavioral skills and learn how to better manage their emotions. With that in mind, here are some resources for this week.
FOR PARENTS…
This is the link for the Behavior Response Support Team out of the University of Utah with some amazing colleagues doing great work for families. They are releasing a series of videos to provide parents with quick tips for behavior support in the home. There are versions in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese.
This is a series of videos for parents that are part of the Practiced Routines Curriculum, and these were only recently made available for free. Dr. Meme Hieneman is an expert in Family Based Positive Behavior Support and guides families through a step-by-step process for routine-based interventions.
FOR KIDS…
Many of your children should be familiar with the Second Step curriculum which are social emotional lessons that we (myself and Ms. Keshia) teach. In an effort to provide support to families during Covid-19, Second Step has just released some lessons that will help children learn how to better manage their emotions. Below are lessons for each grade level.
Kindergarten - We Feel Our Feelings In Our Body
First Grade - Identifying Our Own Feelings
Second Grade - Emotion Management for 2nd Graders
Third Grade - Emotion Management for 3rd Graders
Fourth Grade - Emotion Management for 4th Graders
Fifth Grade - Emotion Management for 5th Graders

ESSENTIAL WORKERS CHILDCARE SURVEY
Hello all-
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Newsom issued an executive order concerning emergency child care for children of essential workers who are not able to work remotely. We need your help in publicizing a short online survey to determine type of care, age groups, hours, and location needed by workers in three priority areas:
- Essential Worker Priority 1: Healthcare/Public Health and Emergency Service sectors
- Essential Worker Priority 2: Food and Agriculture; Teachers, education staff, and providers of early learning and care services including custodial, kitchen staff, and other support staff; Workers supporting critical infrastructure; State and local government workers; Communications and Information Technology IT; Energy, Transportation and Logistics; Critical Manufacturing; Hazardous Materials; Financial Services; and Chemical sectors
- Essential Worker Priority 3: All other fields listed as Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers
Please share this survey (available in English and Spanish) with your members and ask them to take it by May 6.
The survey will be managed by the San Diego County Office of Education; high-level aggregate data will be shared with existing child care providers, schools, funders, employers and organizations supporting essential workers’ access to child care during school closures, YMCA Childcare Resource Service, and Community Care Licensing.
This survey will also serve as a tool to be maintained for future reference in the emergency preparedness materials for the child care sector.
If you have questions about the survey, please contact Lucia Garay, Executive Director of Early Education Programs and Services for SDCOE, at 858-292-3801 or lgaray@sdcoe.net.
Respectfully,
