Reformation
Kenny O. 5th period
What was the change ?
The Reformation was a change in the Catholic Church. People started to protest the leadership, rituals, and the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church. Reformers wanted the church to change and become more spiritual and humble. This lead to the creation of the Protestant churches
Who were the people associated with the change ?
Martin Luther
The 95 Theses, made by Martin were formal statements attacking the pardon-merchants. He posted them on the churches doors, that way everybody could seem them. Examples of the 95 theses are "All people with faith were equal. Therefore, people did not need priest to interpret the Bible for them," and "Indulgences were valid expressions of faith."
King Henry VIII
King Henry VIII was married to a Spanish princess, Katharine of Aragon. Together they had a daughter, Mary but Henry wanted a son, because later he could be in charge. He believed his wife was to old to have another child so he asked the pope to annul the marriage so he could remarry. Pope refused, therefore Henry passed the Act of Supremacy, this made him head of the church and country. He remarried five times and only had one son, Edward with his third wife
Pope
The pope or the head of church was selling indulgences. Indulgences is a kind of forgiveness that releases a person from punishment. People could also win salvation by paying money to the church.
How did the change impact society at the time ?
The Catholic church became more unified as a result from the Council of Trent. The Council of Trent was a meeting of church leaders that met to pass doctrines. Individual monarchs and states gained more power. This led to the development of modern nation-states. It also caused an overall decline in the authority of the church.
How is that change evidenced in today's modern society ?
The Catholic church today has a mission to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. People need good work as well as faith to win salvation. The church itself has its own beliefs separate from the state.
