Grandparents and Special Friends Day

As promised, these are the details for Grandparents and Special Friends Day at Folsom Elementary.

Thursday November 19

- Kindergarten lunch 10:30-11:30 Second grade lunch 11:30-12:30 Fourth grade lunch 12:30-1:30

Friday November 20

- Third grade lunch 11:00-12:00 First grade lunch 12:00-1:00

Students will eat lunch in their classroom on the day their grade level does not have guests. They may bring a sack lunch from home or order one from the cafe.

This is a day you REALLY want a Fast Pass! Your license must be scanned BEFORE the event. If you've been to school this year, you're in the system. Guests are welcome to have their license scanned during any school day.

Guests are invited to visit the Monster Book Fair and pose for pictures in one of the photo booths on the stage.

This is a regular, but special, instructional day for us. Early check-out for students will impact perfect attendance awards and must be done through the front office by an approved adult in Skyward.

Please contact Ms. Jones or Mrs. Fields if you have specific questions regarding your family and this special day.

As the weather changes please make sure to write your child's last name in their jackets. Also please remember if your child wears boots to school, they still need to bring shoes for PE.

Karate Belt Math

We have been learning math strategies to help us add quickly and we have a fun new way to motivate our first graders to practice these strategies. You can help at home by practicing with the flash cards below.

I will be pacing the class by practicing one strategy at a time. Each time they master the use of that strategy, they will earn a karate belt. Its’ really a colored piece of electrical tape on their pencil, but it works! Then, depending on their progress, we will release the next set of flash cards that focus on the next strategy. Your child is working in class on earning their White belt by writing their numbers forwards and backwards to 50.

Next week, we will begin by practicing the counting on strategy(yellow belt). It is quite simple and the kids should earn this belt quickly. The math facts are all (?+1) or (?+2). They will earn their yellow belt if they successfully complete this set and then move on to the next belt (set of cards). I will send out the attachments for the new strategy and explain the strategy as we progress. They will progressively get more difficult so expect the times to vary between earning their belts.

I hope you enjoy helping your student prepare for this at home. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Math is very different today, than the way we learned! Please use the attached documents to work on these concepts at home.

Help your child become a better reader...

Confidence and reading ability improve when children know Dolch sight words. Many of these sight words are in almost anything they read. Readers will have more experiences of success if they know these words. Dolch words are service words which are necessary for understanding sentences. Please use the list below to help with your child's learning.
