Notre Dame Catholic Primary School
Foundations for Life Long Learning 27 February
Dear Parents and Staff
At yesterday morning’s Ash Wednesday Mass, attended by the children and staff from Years Three to Six, we received the ashes which were produced by burning the palms from last year’s Palm Sunday celebration. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the church’s Season of Lent, a time, as Fr Quynh reminded us in his homily, of Penance, Prayer and Almsgiving. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us and are a reminder of our humanity. We so often think of what we can “give up” for Lent. Pope Francis in his reflection, above, puts a different slant on this idea and provides us with inspiration of how we can all try to make a difference in our troubled world.
FUNDRAISER
Thank you to all children, parents and staff for your support of our Bushfire Fundraiser today. It was great to see everyone wearing their best Aussie outfits to recognise that we are part of a great nation that cares for all of its members. The $750.00 raised will be forwarded to the St Vincent de Paul Bushfire Appeal to support those in need after the devastation of the recent fires.
DADS’ & KIDS’ CAMPOUT
Forms to register your attendance at this great event will be sent home next Tuesday. Under the guidance of Adam Ciccarone and Stuart Doncon most of the planning has been completed and we now need Dads and their Kids to sign up. Please ensure that forms are returned to school by no later than Wednesday 11 March so that appropriate arrangements may be made. This is a free event that is generously fully funded by our school’s P&F.
KEYED UP MUSIC
A number of parents attended the information evening conducted by Keyed Up Music on the Parent/Teacher evening held earlier in the year. I have been advised by Keyed Up Music that there are 3 students who are interested in learning the drums and 2 students interested in learning violin. As advised at the meeting there is a requirement for at least 3 students to be enrolled for lessons to be offered. If you are interested in your child learning to play the violin please contact Therese Dabbs on 0401 085 030 to discuss.
STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
As tomorrow is a Professional Development day for the staff there is no school for the children. The staff will spend the day exploring aspects of our Mercy tradition and how this impacts on our school and teaching methods.

PROJECT COMPASSION
On Wednesday, Years 3-6 celebrated Ash Wednesday Mass with St Maria Goretti School. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Church’s season of Lent, a time to help and enrich others. During this time, we raise money for Caritas Australia. Caritas Australia is a Catholic agency for international aid and development which works with all people to enable them to learn more about poverty, with the aim of inspiring people to "be more" and serve the poorest in our world.
Each family has been given a Project Compassion box and an information brochure about what your donations can do. Please give as little or as much as you can. Large donation boxes will also be allocated to each class. Boxes and information will be distributed through class satchels on Friday.

YEAR 4 CLASS NEWS
We have been very busy learning in Year 4. Our learning journey term has been filled with lots of amazing things.
We have been busy mathematicians learning about three and four digit numbers, their place value and expanded notation. We have been taking part in many challenging mental math games which have helped us to become more accurate with our basic facts.
Over the last few weeks we have been learning about the meaning of conscience and how Jesus wants us to develop our own, by listening to our hearts when we make choices. We have also discussed the definition and conditions of sin.
In HASS, we have been studying Australian history. We have read various Dreamtime stories and we have learnt about the importance of this to Aboriginal culture. We have begun writing our own Dreamtime retells and creating Aboriginal dot paintings and Totem poles.
In Health we have commenced learning about how to be Cyber Safe and good digital citizens. It has been lots of fun using our iPads in class and taking them home during the week.

P & F NEWS
DADS' & KIDS' CAMP OUT FRIDAY 20 MARCH 2020
NIGHT MARKET
The P&F would like to thank all of the parents and staff who volunteered their time to assist at this year's fabulous Night Market/10-year celebration. The children were treated to a whole day of fun with the Vertical Rush water slide, Pacific Ocean and Frozen bouncy castles during the day, and then into the evening with the addition of the Silent Disco and Face Painting. As always, the food was amazing and is was wonderful to host some of our very own Notre Dame families in the Mother Mary Piazza, offering their delicious meals and desserts.
Thank you to all of the parents who assisted with set up, manning the gate, putting together the amazing Valentine’s Day hampers and selling raffle tickets on the night. Thank you to the staff for providing the ever so popular sausage sizzle/beef roll, assisting the P&F to sell cool drinks and organising music for the evening.
Thank you to everyone who attended and tidied up after themselves and observed the regulations around the occasional liquor licence. We hope you had a great night.
