Kindness Challenge
Our Kindness Challenge kicks off after our November 1st awards ceremony. Rather than just talk the talk, students at Glenwood will be challenged to document over 5,000 Acts of Kindness in just 15 days. Anything from opening a door, picking up a pen, or even sharing a smile, can be an act of kindness and no act is too small to document. Students will be reminded that we perform acts of kindness because they are the right thing to do and not look for attention. Students will also be reminded to never be afraid to do the right thing and have the courage to help someone in need. Last year students learned the three most important life skills needed to change the world: have no fear of being made fun of for doing the right thing, be committed to being a good person no matter how mean someone may be, and always live your life as if you were the hero of your dreams. We will ask our students to never give-up, no matter how difficult the task may be and be willing to help others.
Students will all be given kindness journals where they will keep a record of their efforts. Our hope is that students learn that kindness is always the right choice. Glenwood students will work together with the kindness crew to become a school where all students become ambassadors of kindness.
Ten fifth graders will be selected by their classroom teachers because of their leadership abilities and consistent kindness to lead Glenwood in this project.
Last year, students donated shoes to children in Africa. This year we are putting our efforts to a local organization. Our challenge this year is to provide a Thanksgiving dinner to as many Rutland families as possible. Students are asked to bring in donations to support the Rutland Food Pantry.

Notes from Mrs. Lawton, School Nurse
Health Update 10/20/2017:
I hope you are all enjoying this great fall weather lately. With the Winter season around the corner and the need to wear hats, I wanted to remind Parents and Guardians to remind their children that they should not be sharing hats/visors with other children, and also they should not be sharing hair implements. You should be checking your child’s hair on a continuous basis.
If you discover head lice in your child's hair, do not send them to school. You should notify the health office and you will need to notify your MD and they will need to be properly treated before coming back to school. When they do return to school, they need to be checked here in the health office before they return to class.
I have recently finished with all the results of the Vision and Hearing screenings. I have sent home letters for those students that will need further follow-up with their MD’s. If you could return those letters to me when the follow-up is done, that would be great!
Thank you to all those that have sent in recent copies of their children’s MD physicals and updated immunizations- I appreciate it. For those of you who haven’t been able to yet- if you could send them along as soon as possible, that would be great!
- When we receive a note from a doctor letting us know a child can not participate in gym class, we have to follow the doctor's orders. Therefore, a students cannot return to gym without updated orders that clear them for participation. Please make sure there is a start and end date, if possible, on doctor's orders.

PE class
Steam Into Fall
STEAM participants created their own Bristlebots last Wednesday. Bristlebots are simple micro-robots which use a conventional toothbrush head and micro-motors. They also got to taste astronaut ice cream. This week students decorated pumpkins and created a witches brew in a cauldron combining crushed dragon teeth, vampire toe nails, troll saliva, unicorn horns, monster snot, powdered bones, spider venom and juiced eyeballs (everyday materials were used) to create a chemical reaction.

Magazine Drive
Square 1 Art
Dear Family,
We have partnered with your child’s school to create a unique opportunity to celebrate their artistic accomplishments while raising much needed funds for the school.
Coming home soon will be your child’s custom catalog featuring their artwork. Won’t you help make your child feel like an accomplished artist by purchasing keepsakes for the whole family containing their masterpiece? The school earns profit from every order. And as a thank you for participating, we provide each child with a sheet of stickers imprinted with their artwork — absolutely FREE!
Watch for more details about the campaign and order deadlines. All online and paper order forms must be turned in by the due date on your child’s custom catalog. (No late orders can be accepted.) Together, we can help support the school, build your child’s self-esteem, and create lasting keepsakes from your child’s artistic achievements.
