Help with Reminders Please
Just a reminder, any cell phone (or cellular device) should be turned off and in students' backpacks during the school day. This includes phones, apple, watches, etc. We are happy to work with you on getting in touch with your child, if needed.
If your child walks home, please ask them to leave campus as soon as they are dismissed. Some have been hanging around, causing confusion of who still needs to be picked up which makes teachers late for things like Primary Hour and collaboration time. Thank you!
Please also remember that students should not bring toys to school. This includes fidgets that they play with, rather than use as a tool to help them focus. We also ask that Pokeman cards stay home, as trades happening on campus are causing some frustration and hurt feelings amongst students. We appreciate your support on this!
Counselor's Corner
Hello Hawk Families!
Many of you are probably looking forward to some upcoming holidays. While the holidays can be a time of great joy, they can also be very busy times where we often forget to slow down and take care of ourselves. One easy way to help our kids (and ourselves) relax is using deep breathing exercises.
The way we breathe affects our whole body. Just a few deep breaths can help slow your heart rate, reduce tension, and relieve some stress. Breathing exercises help us to stay in better control of our body and our emotions. There are LOTS of different breathing exercises – try some with your child and see which one(s) work for them. Breathing exercises should be learned and practiced when children are calm so they can use it when they are not.
Below are three breathing strategies I have modeled for students that you can use at home.
- Box breathing:
- In box breathing you can hold or imagine something square (post-its work great). While you trace one line, breathe in, hold your breath as you draw the next line, then breathe out, and hold again as you draw the last line. Try to make each line last the same number of seconds (start with 4 and see if you can go longer).
- Lion breathing:
- Slowly breathe in as deeply as you can and then blow it out as hard as you can (make sure they are not blowing air out near anyone).
- Flower/candle breathing:
- Hold a finger up, pretend it’s a flower. Smell the flower. Then pretend it’s a candle and blow it out! https://youtu.be/qTN_MtV5TFw
Taking 3 to 10 deep breaths with whichever strategy works for you will help your brain and body calm down significantly no matter what is going on around you. So when you notice it’s getting harder for your child to focus, they feel upset, or they just need to slow down a little, ask them to take some deep breaths. It will help!
For more strategies, check out this article on Breathing Exercises for Relaxation.
