Musical Crew Info and Opportunities for Students and Families!
We are so excited to get started on backstage work for this year’s musical! We would love to have you join. Please open our Google Form by QR code, or by typing this URL into your browser. There is more information about our crew positions on the google form.
Form URL: https://forms.gle/jffgsAR2NKTYUfJe6
We have TWO options for crew: PREP CREW and RUNNING CREW. See the Google Form for information about each.
Please note–we will collect a $20 activity fee from crew members before the end of March. This fee will go directly back to the student–it will pay for their t-shirt and dinners on the evenings of dress rehearsals. We will send more info home about the fee soon, reach out with any concerns!
We will hold a meeting in Ms. Smith’s room (Room 3) after school on Wednesday, March 22nd. (3:45-4:30) See you there!

Notes from our Nurse
If your student has had an injury that will interfere with their daily schedule, please notify the Nurse’s Office. Get documentation at each appointment as it is required by the Shawnee Mission School District. It is much easier to ask for documentation from your doctor while you are at an appointment than hunt someone down later. Thank you 🙂
Cold and flu season! Yes it’s March and yes, we’re still in it.
Just a reminder - the nurse’s office does not keep cold medicine and nasal sprays in the office. If your student is needing them, please administer before school. If you would like your student to take them at school, you are welcome to supply them along with a Medication Permission Form.
General Wellness
We see a lot of headaches that need water,
Tummy aches that need a snack,
And tired kids that were up too late the night before.
Help your student be successful! Please encourage your students to get plenty of sleep, drink enough water and eat a filling breakfast. We have water bottle filling stations - have your student bring a bottle from home they can drink throughout the day.

Market Day is Back!
Our fall Market Day was such a success that we are doing it again this spring. This time, it will be all virtual.
If you have a student that wants to participate again or a student that saw how awesome it was and want to join in the fun, sign up using the QR code or the link in Knight Time Canvas.
Our first informational meeting will be March 8th.

Last "Next Great Idea" Pitch Push
Reminder: The deadline to apply for The Next Great Idea pitch competition is Friday, March 3, 2023.
Students are encouraged to apply now to enter the Shawnee Mission School District’s Next Great Idea competition. This contest gives students a chance to share their ideas for solving a problem and to win prize money.
What kinds of ideas can be entered? Students are encouraged to think of a problem they would like to solve and then come up with a strategy to solve it. The possibilities are unlimited!
Some options might be:
- A student-created app
- An invention (Maybe something that will diagnose or cure a disease, a community park enhancement, something to help the environment, or a prototype to make a household task easier.)
- A business plan
- An idea for a nonprofit to address a local, national, or global need
The Next Great Idea is a part of the district’s Research and Development Forum (R&D Forum), a districtwide celebration of student innovation and achievement.
How to apply:
Application information can be found on the SMSD’s R&D webpage. Optional practice sessions with industry mentors will be available for students who apply to compete.
About the contest and Prize $$$
Applicants chosen as finalists will pitch their Next Great Idea to a panel of judges during the morning of April 29, 2023, at the Center for Academic Achievement, 8200 W. 71st Street.
The pitch competition will be live-streamed so friends and family can participate as well. Top awards are $2,500, of which $1,000 is a cash award to be used by the winner to pursue their passion and education and up to $1,500 will be awarded as "build it" grants to support making the winner's pitch a reality. A People's Choice category, determined by public voters, will be awarded a $500 prize. There will also be an Idea of Promise award with a prize of $500.
About the R&D Forum
The Shawnee Mission Research and Development Forum celebrates its 61st year in 2023. It is one of the SMSD’s biggest student project showcases of the year!
Sincere appreciation is extended to the Regnier Family for 61 years of generous support for the SMSD R&D Forum.
