Hello Little Hawk Families

Welcome back to another excellent year at South East Junior High! We have had a tremendous start to the year and are very excited about the group of 7th and 8th graders we have this year. Each month I will send a newsletter using this format with information about upcoming events, dates to be aware of and general happenings at school. Please know that you are always welcome to contact us anytime you have questions! I have included a list below of people who can help with different questions, but you are always welcome to call the main office and we can direct your question to the appropriate contact. Thank you for sending us your students every day. It is truly an honor to work with such incredible students and families.

Lost and Found

Lost and found articles are kept on the bench outside the Main Office, except for small items which are kept inside the office. Please label all clothing and personal items with your student's name.

Several times a year unclaimed items are donated to charity. Before collecting unclaimed items for donation, we will make an announcement reminding students to check lost and found for missing items.

We encourage students not to bring items of significant value to school. If it is necessary for your student to carry valuable items to school, the items may be stored temporarily in the Main Office during the school day.

South East 2018-19 Bell Schedule

Construction Update

Thanks to the community passing the GO Bond South East is ready for some much needed updates and expansion! Our construction project will begin September of 2018 and should be mostly completed by the start of the 2020-2021 school year. Phase 1 of this project includes HVAC improvements to fully air-condition our entire building, lighting and flooring updates, additional classrooms, renovations to create collaborative spaces for our CASL programs and blended learning and a new library! We will begin construction at the end of September in the Northeast corner of the building, and in the courtyard. They will be remodeling the NE corner of the building to create a collaborative space both upstairs and downstairs, and building a new science room. This will house our 7th and 8th grade CASL programs. They will also begin construction of 3 new classrooms on the lower level in the courtyard, with a new library on the upper level in the courtyard. We will still preserve some of the courtyard. This new design will allow for a beautiful patio area outside of the library for students to enjoy during nice weather. See the drawing below for an idea of what our new library and courtyard area will look like!

With the construction, we have had to move into all 10 classrooms in the temporary building located out back. We will be rotating classrooms over the next two years as work continues in the building. Please let me know if you have any questions. I will continue to keep you updated on our progress!

Little Hawk Time

If you missed back to school night last week and are a new parent, here is some information on our Little Hawk Time. If you have questions- please let us know!

The Iowa City Community School District will be giving a new standardized test this year, different from the Iowa Assessments we have known in the past. The test will be developed by the University of Iowa. They have not finalized a name yet. The tests will cover reading, writing, math and science. Other subject areas that have been tested in the past will not be tested with these new assessments. These tests will most likely be given in a computerized format and will be administered in the spring. More details will come as we get more information from the University.

PE Uniforms!

Physical Education students must have a PE Uniform consisting of a Tee-shirt with their Last Name written on the back in marker, athletic shorts or sweatpants/leggings, tennis shoes and socks. Deodorant is highly encouraged. Laundering the PE Uniform every week or so is great too. Failing to wear a PE Uniform results in the loss of a point per class of two points possible. Thank you for assisting in keeping your child prepared for class and successful. Now they’ll be ready for activity. If you need help acquiring clothes for PE, please let your PE teacher or the office know.

As we discussed at Back to School Night, and hopefully you have heard from your students, all teachers are using the Canvas Learning Management system this year. This will take the place of teacher websites in terms of having one place where all assignments, due dates, agendas, etc are posted. We are working on getting information out on how parents can access their child's canvas account. For now, you can ask your student to log into their Canvas on their Chromebook and you can see what it looks like and what to expect. More information will be coming soon!

Stadium Clean Up

If you have a student that is out for a fall sport or is planning to participate in one of our winter or spring sports we need your help. South East Jr. High is responsible for cleaning the south end zone of Kinnick Stadium this coming Sunday morning, 9/9. We need all athletes, parents and coaches on hand in order to get this done in a timely manner. Gates open at 7:00 AM. We are usually done by 8:15. If you have a gas leaf blower we encourage you to bring it with you. The more blowers we have the better job we do and the sooner we are done. If you do not have a blower, report to the concourse under the west stands to get brooms and bags. We encourage recycling of all cardboard and plastic items. There are recycling bags available in the west concourse. Please start at the top of the stadium and work down. Move all waste materials to an aisle and then clean the aisles from the top down. All bags of garbage and recyclables should be moved to the concourse area. South East is responsible for the entire south end zone so please stay until we are all done. This a major athletic fundraising activity for South East. The money that we receive helps pay for athletic uniforms and equipment for all sports. Thanks in advance for your help. See you Sunday morning.
