Pinehill School News - 23 June
23 June, 2021 - Week 8, Term 2
Message from our Principal
Kia ora tatou,
This week is full of fabulous learning opportunities and experiences for our students outside of the classroom. This includes the Cluster Football Tournament, Year 1 and 2 classes EOTC event with Neverland Dance Studio and Swimming as well as Gymnastics for all classrooms in our school hall, the GRIP leadership day for our House leaders and the up and coming Trees for Survival day for the Year 5/6 team on Friday.
Cluster Football Tournament
Congratulations to our Year 5/6 students who competed in the Cluster football tournament yesterday and placed first! We were excited to get updates of the games throughout the day and as our students were playing in the final, we were thinking of the team during our full school assembly and sending much luck their way. We had a loudspeaker announcement through all classrooms and celebration as we returned from assembly to hear the team had won. We are so very proud of you all.
Gymnastics
All of our classrooms have a block timetabled in with trained gym instructors who have transformed our hall into a gymnastics studio. These opportunities are allowing our students to experience all the cogs of the Pinehill Way (Respect, Responsibility, Excellence, Integrity and Resilience). We are so very proud, especially of the resilience, our students are displaying when experiencing something different, new and challenging.
Room 12 opening next term
We have had many new enrolments of late, most of which will start next term. We will be starting up a New Entrant class on day 1 of next term in room 12 and welcome Ashley Shearer who will be the teacher for room 12.
Pinehill School Uniform
As the weather grows colder, we are noticing students arriving at school with layers of clothing to keep warm. Please ensure our students are wearing the school uniform. I have attached the school uniform policy for your quick reference. We have a large amount of school uniform items in the lost property box, including many unnamed polar fleeces. Please check all your child's uniform items are named to support us with returning any items that end up in lost property.
Health Curriculum Survey for Parents
Every two years we reach out to our school community for feedback on our Pinehill School Health curriculum.
This process allows us to be able to ensure that our health curriculum meets the needs of our students. We recently sent out the survey to all our families. We had 16 families complete the survey and the information that has come back to us is incredibly valuable as we plan ahead. We are reopening the survey as we would love to hear from more of you. The survey will remain open until Wednesday 7th July and is quick and easy to complete.
If you haven’t already, we would appreciate you taking time to provide feedback on the current health programme by clicking on the link. Click here
It was great to see so many parents at the ‘Parent Catch up with the Principal’ yesterday morning. This morning session together gave us a great opportunity to cover topics such as The Pinehill Way, ESOL requirements, Understanding your child's school report as well as our process for any concerns you may have. Thank you for coming along. I enjoyed the opportunity to further connect with our families as well as meet new families whose children are just starting their journey with us at Pinehill School.
Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini
Success is not the work of one but the work of many.

Rangitoto College Korean Cultural night rehearsal is this Thursday @ 6pm.
I’m really pleased to say that we will again be able to invite a small number of our students, accompanied by a parent, to the Rangitoto College Korean Cultural night rehearsal – entry by koha (donation). We have been offered tickets for Year 5 and 6 students only with one parent to stay with child. If your child is interested in dance or performance, or who would enjoy the opportunity please send your name to natalie@pinehill.school.nz to reserve a place. Your name will be ticked off at the door. Tickets are limited so please advise your interest before Thursday.
Term 3 Swimming Lessons
The ability to swim is an important part of growing up in New Zealand. As part of our physical education programme, we will be working with the Millennium Institute to improve our students' swimming confidence.
Swimming classes for Y1-6 children will begin in the first week of Term 3. All children should have received a letter with a slip to return to school. Parents of Y1-4 children are asked to complete the survey which will help the swimming instructors group the swimmers. The link for this survey will be sent out via the school app and through email. We look forward to helping your children develop their swimming skills.
Thanks for your support.

TFS Planting Out Day is this Friday
Our native plants have been picked up and transported out to Waitoki ready for our planting out day this Friday 25 June.
Gear lists were given to students a few weeks ago, but if you need another copy, please find the link on the Pinehill website (school information - notices, forms and permission slips). It is very important that students and adults have the right clothing and gear for the day as the planting site is very exposed to the weather.
Thank you to all the adults who have volunteered this year. We are very appreciative of your support. There will be a safety briefing for adults in the school hall foyer at 8:30am on Friday morning. This is a very important meeting and we ask that you are on time for this.
Adult helpers should have received an email with information on Monday. Please email marg@pinehill.school.nz if you have not received this email.
We look forward to having another successful planting event.

Board News
The Board met again last week and had the pleasure of seeing presentations from some Pinehill staff members. Teacher, Lisa Everett, presented on the merits of a Bring Your Own Device initiative that the school has started to investigate. This initiative is in the very early stages of scoping and the Board will convene again on this topic later in the year when more data and information is available.
Improvement in the Writing curriculum is one of the school's main strategic goals for the year, so it was great to hear from Deputy Principals Rochelle Mabon and Sarah Ward who presented the school's e-asTTle data. This is an online assessment tool developed to assess students’ achievement and progress in the Writing curriculum area. e-asTTle provides teachers and school leaders with information that can be used to inform learning programmes and to apply teaching practice that maximises individual student learning.
Recently the school sent a survey out to parents about how our health curriculum is implemented. We have decided to extend the consultation period with the school community and would like to encourage everyone to complete the brief survey to help us understand more about your views on what you think is important to teach our children within the Health curriculum. Please click here to complete to give us your feedback. This includes topics such as understanding and expressing feelings, learning how to keep ourselves safe, risks and dangers of online spaces, building confidence through education outside the classroom and things like school camp.
In property and maintenance news, you may have noticed that the electronic gate at the front entrance to the school has been non-operational for some time. We have now received quotes to have the gate repaired and this work will be carried out during the school holidays. All going well, the gate will be up and running when you return from the July holidays.
The Board would like to thank all of our Pinehill families for a great first half of the year - there have been some great opportunities for our school community to get involved in school events, school trips, sports and children's learning during the first 6 months of 2021. We wish everyone a lovely school holiday break.
