What Does a School Counselor Do?
As the school counselor, I help promote a safe and healthy school culture and help all students succeed and meet their fullest potential. There is no typical day in the life of a school counselor, but my days are spent working directly or indirectly for the students through the following components:
Academic, College and Career Development
- Implement school-wide career event annually
- Teach minimum of 3 classroom lessons a year supporting career and college readiness for kindergarten through 5th grade
- Assist in testing, SIT team meetings and Response to Intervention
- Consult with students, families, and teachers
- Monitor and support student attendance
Social and Emotional Learning
- Classroom lessons on DESE Grade Level Expectations for social, personal, and emotional development
- Brief, school-based, solution-focused Individual counsel when referred by student, teacher, administration, or family
- Mediation and conflict resolution
- stress/anxiety management
- Small groups supporting the social, personal, emotional, and academic development of students
Consultation, Collaborating, and Referrals to Community Resources
- Inform and refer to mental health services
- Connect families with resources to support needs outside of the school setting (Example: food, health, hygiene)
Responsive Services
I will respond to student needs including, but not limited to
- crisis
- grief or loss
- self-harm
- trauma
- family changes
- safety threat
- friendship issues
I cannot diagnose or implement regular therapy in the school setting.
