Annual Report

James Van Allen Elementary Library 2019-2020

We're in this together!

Libraries and librarians have always been about bringing people, ideas, books, technology, etc. together. This year proved to be a year that would really show how adaptive and creative we can be as a team.

Vision Statement

The ICCSD school library program empowers students to be curious, passionate, respectful learners who explore, connect, evaluate, and create.

Mission Statement

The best schools have library programs that engage their entire school communities to elevate learning experiences for all.

ICCSD Teacher Librarians are strategically positioned to:

  • teach students and staff to think critically and independently to construct new understanding and insights from varied information sources.

  • lead and embrace the integration of technology to enhance learning.

  • connect communities of learners in virtual and physical spaces.

  • collaborate with the school community to design and enact rigorous learning experiences and participate as positive digital citizens.

  • maximize access to quality print and digital resources.

  • champion and support the reading life of every student.

  • nurture curiosity to develop a lifelong passion for learning.

Big picture
All students in grades k-6 participated in Hour of Code activities either using the computer or unplugged. Students in 2nd-6th grade were able to use the Spheros in library class for 2 weeks. 60 new Chromebooks were added to our collection to replace iPads and I taught both students and staff how to use these new devices.

Big picture
Connecting virtually became more important than ever after spring break. I created a FlipGrid for staff to connect to families and eventually a video that shared how much we were missing our students. I also attending many virtual PLCs, Classroom Zooms, and District level meetings. I became part of the front-line of troubleshooting for students, teachers and parents during our closure. I hope I can continue to make these connections in person, soon.

As the teacher librarian at Van Allen, I am part of the Instructional Leadership Team, I attend most Professional Learning Community meetings with grade level teams, and I am part of the Cultural Proficiency Team at the Iowa City Community Schools District level. I think it is important that I have a leadership role in the building and the district as teacher librarians are able to see the "big picture" and move resources whether digital or print to where they need to be.

Big picture
If there is one thing I learned from the 2019-2020 school year, it is that we need to nurture the whole person. Whether is it participating in staff vs. student basketball, running (walking) with the Mile Club kids, participating in de-escalation training, collaborating with teachers, learning new skills, teaching my own library classes, or just WHATEVER needs to be done, we need to see our students and each other as whole beings with goals, dreams, insecurities, worries, fears. And my goal for 2020-2021 is to build relationships and nurture people however that looks.
