Starling: Enjoy Your Process
A Look At Delineating Aspects of Our Process
Process
I realize I end each Starling episode with "enjoy your process" but haven't really shared my thoughts on Process Art or phases in the creative process. So I took this episode to share some thoughts and allowed the work of musician William Basinski to illustrate my own thoughts on allowing a process to unfold. I'm sure there is so much more to say about this concept, but wanted to just start the conversation.
Listen at the link below and explore the curated content about topics discussed in the episode.
Process Art
I started the show with a quote by Jackson Pollock who inspired the Process Art Movement. Learn more about Process Art at the link below and click on the photos to learn about Jackson Pollock and Richard Serra.
The Odyssey
I mentioned the Odyssey in passing but...will say it is a great example of a life long process of open ended discovery.

Explore Creative Process Ideas
Here are links to a few different ways people have defined the creative process for you to explore.
William Basinski
I discussed William Basinski's musical work, The Disintegration Loops as an example of an overarching creative process. Below is a link to the first of the 4 albums, featuring the cover art as well as 2 different interviews.
For some reason I could not link the playlist here. I will share that on social media.

Recap of Practices:
- Consider how you create relationship with the muse. Have you sent the invitation? Created the space? Made a seat at your table for the personification of creativity? Perhaps you need to write a love letter to creativity? Perhaps you need a ceremonial moment where you commit to your personal creative process that is designed for you not necessarily by you. How have you shown appreciation to the process?
- In what ways have you denied or blocked your own process? How have you tried to set boundaries and goals that have stalled a process in order to maintain your own control over your artistic development…how about over your life process as a whole?
- Play with the ideas of process art, pick a material that lets you see the process in action. There are lots of ways this can be done…and I highly encourage you to find your own method…not just copy Pollack or any other artist. The material you chose will guide you.
- Have you sensed creative serendipity before? The moments where something is created in connection to larger life moments. The way Basinski’s work coincided with 9/11. Are you open to that…can you let go of your own goals to connect with the life process as a whole?
- Could you destroy something you created earlier to allow it to become something else. To connect with that creation destruction cycle.
- How do you delineate boundaries in your own creative process. Maybe look at the way some other people have defined the phases in the process and see if you believe their evaluation. Perhaps make your own phases. See which aspects you feel are necessary to define and how you would do that.
- Then look at boundaries in your own work process. When do you call a work done? When can you end a phase of your own overarching process and have a product to show for it. Do you tend to share before you should or…do you overwork things and miss the sweet spot. How can you hone in and know where to stop and start? Learning where to end and where to begin again is a skill artists develop by doing it over and over again.
- What little processes have lead you to the process you are in now? And…where are you in that process.

Donations Accepted
I learned from my Grandmother, that if you are offering a service allow people to contribute whatever they feel the service is worth. She never had a set fee when she did readings for her clients, she just asked them to pay her what they thought the reading was worth. Sometimes she made a little, sometimes she made a lot. If you are finding the content you receive through Starling to be supporting your creative practice and would like to help support this service, I am accepting donations. I don't have a Patreon account yet...and have a lot to consider about how that would even work.
If you want to support the content provided through Starling I would greatly appreciate donations since I no longer have a day job. You can contribute through my PayPal account email for my new studio project: starlingartstudios@gmail.com. or just click the link below.
