  • Social Studies PARCC test- April 24th-May 4th

Social Studies

Students have begun their study of Ancient Greece, which will wrap up by the 24th.

We are learning how Ancient Greece was a culture region made up of city states due to its geography. We will also study how democracy evolved in this part of the world. Of course we will spend time delving into the battles that make this part of the world so popular with many of the students. Ancient Rome will be next after the testing.

We are wrapping up the rest of the Human Body Systems. For the month of April, we will be learning about our Sensory Organs, Nervous System, Immune System, and Genetics. During this time, we will also be "practicing" how to be doctors with our Medical Board Activities and diagnose patients.

In May, our Human Sexuality Unit will begin on May 12th. There will be a Parent Information Night on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 from 5:30pm to 7pm. We will discuss the curriculum and parents will be able to see all handouts given to students as well as view blurbs from each of the movies shown during this unit. Permission slips to be involved in the Human Sexuality Unit or the alternative science class will be given in the middle of April. So, please keep an eye out for these!!

Important Dates:

4/10: Nervous System & Sensory Organs Quiz

4/23: Parent Information Night for Human Sexuality Unit (5:30pm - 7pm)

4/28 & 4/29: Communicable Disease Project due (due date depends on when you will have Science class during the Block Schedule)

Language Arts

Last quarter in LA we are focusing on biographies and research. Students will write and perform a speech at the end of the unit during our Eagleview Wax Museum of Notable names. We are focusing on scientists and inventors. While I expect the unit to fun and engaging, it will also require a lot of work. Three mini-projects will be due along the way that will require students to conduct research, focusing on reliable resources.

Algebra 1A: Student will be working extensively on their algebra skills this month. They will be extending their linear equation knowledge to solving systems of equations using a variety of methods. Students will use the Equal Values method, Elimination method, and Substitution method. Students will also continue to graph linear equations using their understanding of slope-intercept form. Students will have a unit exam the week of April 28th (the exact date is tbd). Students will be having small pop-quizzes throughout the quarter. These quizzes are to help students learn what concepts they need to study for the class final at the end of the year.

Pre-Algebra 7: Students are revisiting and extending their algebra skills. They will be simplifying expressions, solving equations, and explore slope a little more. Students will be extending their work to the distributive property and using inverse operations to solve equations. Students will have a quiz on Friday April 11th. There unit test will be the week of April 28th (exact date tbd).
