Dual-Language Program
Why is it a good program and how does it work?
"The cognitive stimulus of schooling in two languages...leads to the enhanced creativity and analytical thinking" (Collier, 2003)
What is it?
Why it's better than the other programs?

During my observations, I was able to see how different schools were implementing the dual language program. Some did wonderfully, but others not so well. In a particular school, I saw how some fourth graders had difficulty trying to complete their work in a second language. Their teacher would not let them talk to their peers and also did not give them a lot of help. In this classroom there were very little visuals. If they did not know how to translate a word, they had to find it in a dictionary, therefore they spent more time looking for words than actually doing the work. In another school, my experience was completely different. Kindergarten students showed an appropriate mastery in English and Spanish. This room was full of images, of student work posted on the walls, and posters, a word wall with pictures, etc. The teacher would let students quietly talk among themselves and walk around the room if they felt like they had to. With a friendly attitude she was ready to help each student.
