Looking For Alaska

By: John Green

Looking for Alaska is about a boy who switches to a boarding school hoping to find a different and better path for himself. When he gets there his friend introduces him to a girl named Alaska. Alaska is intrigued by death and when a tragedy happens miles and the colonel wonder if they really knew her and after that nothing is the same.

Quotes & Explanations

“Before I got here, I thought for a long time that the way out of the labyrinth was to pretend that it did not exist, to build a small, self-sufficient world in the back corner of the endless maze and to pretend that I was not lost, but home.” (56)

-When mile's was at his old school he was lonely but now that he got to culver's creek he found friends and found a better place.

"But we knew what could be found out, and in finding out, she had made us closer-the Colonel and Takumi and me, anyway. And that was it, she didn't leave me enough to discover her, but she left me enough to rediscover the greater perhaps" (212)

-By Alaska's death, everyone became closer with each other.

"Thomas Edison's last words were: "It's very beautiful over there." I don't know where there is, but I believe it's somewhere, and I hope it's beautiful." (221)

-He hopes that Alaska is happy in place that she is.

The song that I thought related the best to this book was Lane boy by Twenty one pilots because throughout the whole book, self discovery is a big part of it and the main idea of the song is find yourself and be yourself and not listen to what others say.

Friendship is a big theme of looking for Alaska because in the begging when mile's parents throw him a going away party, only 2 people show up. When he went to his old school, he had no friends but when he moved to culvers creek, he made some.

Death is always mentioned in this story. Miles remembers famous peoples last words and Alaska is obsessed with the thought of death.
