Your Classroom and Student Helper

Many of you are working with text features in Common Core. I have found a series of signs that I am using in the media center to highlight these features and I have books from our collection that demonstrate their use.

I have also pulled additional titles that illustrate these features. Students in grades 1-2 will be given these titles and asked to locate specific text features. If you would like to have this set of signs for your classroom they are an Adobe document located on the shared drive, S:\Media Center\text feature signs.

You are also welcome to use the SmartBoard materials that I have in this location on the shared drive, S:\Media Center\Common core. I created this SmartBoard lesson to work with teachers at Lake Murray. We collaborated on this lesson and I would be glad to engage in a team collaboration with some of you. Let me know if you would like to have me attend a grade level planning time. We could set up a time for your class to come to the library media center and we could work together with your class. Within this folder is a word document that provides a link to a YouTube video and a different set of text feature signs.

Upcoming Book Awards

The ALA Youth Media Awards will be announced the morning of Jan. 28. The ALA Youth Media Awards honor children’s and young adult authors and illustrators, as well as producers of children’s audio and video materials. On this date we will learn the winners of the Newbery Medal (awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children) the Caldecott Medal (awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children), and the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award (awarded to the most distinguished American book for beginning readers). I will post these in the February newsletter or you can find the results here once they are announced! For past Newbery winners visit here, for past Caldecott winners visit here, and for past Geisel winners visit here.

I am displaying books in genre categories. Presently I have Fantasy and Realistic Fiction on display in the fiction and everybody sections of the media center. I have the signs that I used stored in this location S:\Media Center\Genre posters. You are welcome to use these.

SC Book Awards

Between February 6-20 we will be voting for the winners of the SC Children's Book Award and the SC Picture Book Award. I have been reading Picture Book Award nominees to K-2. Teachers in 3-5, please encourage your students to be reading Book Award Nominees and if you can make time to read some of the titles to your class that would be great. I have nominees for both awards on display in the library/media center.

K-2 Activities

4K students are now checking out books in their own names. Only one was diminished to tears when they failed to return a book and could not get another one.

5K has begun going to the shelf to locate their books and they are learning to use shelf markers.

1st grade is now borrowing two books. They have learned about the 500 section in nonfiction and can check out books from this area.

2nd grade is learning how to look for books using Destiny Quest.
