William The Conqueror

Biographical Information

William the Conqueror was born in the year 1028 and he died in the year 1087. He was the son of Robert I, the duke of normandy and his concubine Herleva, a peasant woman. As he grew up he became one of the most important military and political leaders in the Middle Ages. In 1060 William defeated a combined army sent against him by King Henry I of France and count Geoffery Martel of Anjou. He conqurerd the country of Maine in 1063. When Edward the confessor died in 1066, William made a heredity claim to the Anglo-Saxon throne. He invaded the islands and won every battle there was. He was crowned king on Christmas Day and he decided to rule his kingdom from Normandy. He established a strong Monarchy by making every Landholder a Vassal to the crown. He preserved the quasi-democratic tradition of “parleying” (the frequent holding of conferences between the king and the nobles).Between 1085 and 1086 William I commissioned a county-by-county assessment of his English realm, this became known as the Domesday Book. Philip I of France and Canute IV of Denmark were major eneimies of Will's empire. In 1077 Philip controlled three major towns in William's empire. 10 years later when Will went to war he suffered a sever injury and slowely died. He devided his empire to his two sons, Robert Curthose and William Rufus, before he died in Setember 9th, 1087

An important batlle Wiiliam was in was The Battle of Hastings. William and his Norman Knights cross the English channel and defeated Harold within 10 months. After he was crowned King, William changed his name to William The Conqueror.

King John

Biographical Information

King John was born in 1166 and died in 1216, he was crowned King on May 27th,1199. He was the son of King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. He was the youngest son and his nickname was "LackLand" because his brothers each owned their own land. He succeeded his brother Richard the LionHeart to the throne of England. In 1189 He married Avisa, daughter and heiress of William Fitz Robert but the marriage was annulled. Later, he married Isabelle of Angouleme in 1200. He was described to be unscrupulous, cruel, disloyal, and a notorious womaniser. He had very treacherous behavior toward his brother, Richard LionHeart. King John was forced into signing the Manga Carta in 1166, this document lowered the power of the King and allowed the formation of a powerful parliament. King John died on October 19, 1216, he died from eating too many peaches.

Joan Of Arc

Biographical Information

Joan of Arc was born January 6th, 1412 and she died on May 30th, 1431. She was the daughter of Jacques d'Arc and Isabelle Romee. Some people believe that Joan was crazy, while others thought she was a gift from God. Joan claimed to receive visions from important Biblical characters such as the Archangel Gabriel. Using her visions lead France toward liberation. She lead thousands of soldiers to battle by the time she was 16 years old. She was captured when she was 19 and she was burned to the stake. 500 years later, she was considered one of the Holy Catholic Saints.
