Taking Geometry Outside
With the long-awaited spring weather finally upon us, Mrs. Kaatz decided to take her Geometry students outside to enjoy the sunshine while expanding their learning. Students created circles and central angles on the pavement using only chalk, string and their creativity. They then used a formula to find the length of the arc formed by the central angle. Using string and a measuring tape, students then checked their answers by actually measuring the length of the arc. Some students had measurements only 5/16 of an inch off!
Measuring the arc and checking that length against the answer the groups got using the formula proved to be a very important part of the this activity. If the values were not even close, it forced the group to look at how they found the circumference, angle measure, and formula. Mrs. Kaatz's students worked together to make sure they used the protractor and formulas correctly. When the numbers didn't add up correctly the students were internally motivated to correct their mistakes in ways we don't always see when working out of a textbook!
