Inner Layers
Core
This is where nuclear fusion takes place, accounts for 10% of the suns mass.
Radiative Zone
Photons bounce around eventually escaping the zone
Convective Zone
Outermost interior layer, where hot gases rise and cooler gases sink
Outer Layers
Photosphere
Considered the surface of the sun.
Chromosphere
The layer above the photosphere. appears as an almost transparent red glow around the sun.
Corona
Outermost layer of gas that can only be seen during a solar eclipse.
Sunspots
Dark spots caused by areas being cooler than the surrounding areas on the suns surface.
Prominence
Huge arches of glowing gas extending outward from the suns surface.
Flare
Explosions that happen on the sun.
Aurora
Lights seen on earth that are caused by solar flares.
