Instructional support & coaching through Texas Lesson Study

A Model for Small School Regional PLC's

Finding another teacher who teaches the same subject, content and grade level can sometimes be difficult in smaller districts. Some teachers may feel like they teach in silos, not having anyone to truly plan and collaborate with, share ideas and resources. This grant from TEA can help alleviate some of those frustrations and issues. Region 17 has formed several content/grade-level specific cohorts for teachers to connect, collaborate and curate with the assistance of an instructional coach, all free to districts and teachers!


Teachers participating this year will also have the opportunity to attend two high powered workshops, Kagan Cooperative Learning Strategies and Thinking Maps. This will be free to those teachers, Texas Lesson Study will provide the resources, registration fees, and sub reimbursement for all days of the training.


Lesson Study is a job-embedded professional development opportunity in which teachers work collaboratively to develop, teach, and revise research-based classroom strategies. The program aims to improve teacher effectiveness, share best practices, improve student outcomes, and provide a platform to demonstrate mastery within the teaching profession.

Lesson Study is a framework for collaborative, instructional research and lesson design that can be implemented by any campus and is proven to be effective in positively impacting teacher effectiveness and student outcomes (Gersten, Taylor, Keys, Rolfhus, & Newman, 2014). This teacher-driven process has also been shown to increase teacher self-efficacy and professional growth, including reported gains in the ability to craft good questions, use a variety of assessment strategies, provide alternate examples to alleviate student confusion and implement alternative instructional strategies (Young, 2018).

The TEA Strategic Plan 2019–2023 includes Lesson Study as a part of TEA's effort to improve teacher in-service training and support by introducing teacher-driven, reflective, and job-embedded professional development and structures (p. 4).

TXLS Facilitator Course is Now Live

TEA via the Texas Gateway has created a Facilitator Training course for any educator to take and receive 8 hours of CPE credit. This course is a wonderful resource for educators to get their feet wet in the lesson study waters and learn to facilitate Lesson Study. This course is a great supplement to in-person Facilitator Trainer of Trainers (TOT) courses being offered through the ESCs across the state. Go to texascourses.org to sign up for the course
