WRTV & Scripps Howard Foundation, If You Give A Child A Book Event

"At WRTV, we believe giving children books can take them new places, open their imaginations, fuel big dreams, plant the seeds for future success and help break the cycle of poverty. Children who lack ongoing access to a rich selection of books spend far less time reading, resulting in lower reading proficiency and a struggle to complete high school and prepare for the world beyond. Unfortunately, many children in low-income neighborhoods lack access to the quality books they need to become competent readers. That’s where our annual “If You Give a Child a Book …” campaign in partnership with the Scripps Howard Fund steps in."

Our book drive will provide FREE BOOKS to local kids and teachers at South Elementary and through a Scholastic Book Fair in January. The kids will be able to choose their own books.

"Several higher education studies have found that when children select their own books, they are more likely to enjoy reading and score higher on comprehension tests. The Scripps Howard Fund’s partnership with Scholastic Books ensures children get to do just that. We’ll bring Scholastic Book Fairs to South Elementary School of Communications so students can select their own books to take home."

Project Lead the Way Opportunity for South Students

Dear Families,

As part of our District STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) initiative, the

MSD of Martinsville will implement a district wide learning experience for our K-4

students. During this two (2) day experience, students and teachers will visit the

Innovation Center at Brooklyn STEM Academy to participate in a grade specific,

hands-on, projected based learning opportunity. This program will introduce the

teachers and students to the PLTW (Project Lead The Way) Launch curriculum.

PLTW Launch is an Evidence-based Learning platform for PreK-5 students. Through

PLTW Launch, students become hands-on problem solvers and learn to collaborate

with their fellow students.

The MSD of Martinsville is dedicated to the STEM education of all students and is proud to offer this unique opportunity to engage all students in this hands-on approach. Because this is a learning experience within the district, there will not be a special permission slip. If you choose to have your child NOT participate, please fill out the PLTW Opt Out Form, and know that your child will be responsible for the missed material on their own time.

No need to pack a sack lunch. As part of our STEM curriculum, Artie’s Cafe has

developed a special STEM integrated menu. The lunch price will be the same as it is at your child’s home school. Complete menu can be found at and

clicking on “Menus”.

Thank you,

Sharon Goodin

We highlighted five Indiana colleges on SES Rewind. Our third and fourth graders completed a scavenger hunt that tied into the staff college signs and buttons.Thank you, Mrs. Wadlington, for organizing our College Go Week events.

Title I Information

Federal funding has been made available through school-wide Title I services to South Elementary for the purpose of providing students with extra support in reading and language arts. This extra support is availabe for all students at South Elementary. Classroom teachers, Title I teachers, and instructional assistants will provide assistance in reading, language arts, and math through small group and indivdual instruction as children demonstrate need for support. Please contact Julie Sullivan at 765-349-1486 Ext. 1654 with any questions about support your child may receive.

Textbook Assistance

Our Free & Reduced Application will be called Curricular Materials & Meal Assistance Application. This application is still needed for families to receive a possible discount on curricular fees and is used by multiple agencies to award additional funding to the district and students. This application can be completed via Family Access.

Families, we will be sending out curricular materials fee statements soon. Reminder, if you were previously eligible for assistance, please apply again. Qualifying could reduce the cost of student curricular materials. To apply, visit the Food Service Tab on Skyward Family Access and complete the application or contact the office of your student’s school for a paper copy.

Child Safety Matters

Our school will be partnering with the Monique Burr Foundation for Children, a leader in abuse and bullying

prevention, to implement their comprehensive, evidence-based prevention program called MBF Child Safety

Matters®. Students receive two fun, engaging, and developmentally appropriate classroom lessons that

educate and empower them to prevent, recognize, and respond appropriately to bullying, cyberbullying, all

types of child abuse, digital abuse, and other digital dangers. A trained facilitator will be implementing the

program in classrooms. Parents will receive information and materials as students participate in the lessons. To

learn more about the program or about child safety, visit or download the

mobile app, “Child Safety Matters,” available at no cost from the App Store or Google Play.
