Cross-Curricular Reading Academy
For Secondary Teachers of All Subject Areas
Offered in collaboration with Notre Dame de Namur University
Join SUHSD teachers and Notre Dame de Namur Instructors in a year-long cohort designed for secondary teachers. Learn strategies for literacy instruction and assessment including:
- Theory and foundational knowledge of reading comprehension
- Interacting with the text
- Reading Behaviors: summarizing, clarifying, questioning and predicting
- Comprehension, Fluency and Phonics
- Supporting students' mindset in reading

Commitments for 2016-17
- Two days in August before the 2016-17 school year
- Nine after school sessions during the school year
- One post-semester day in June, 2017
- Classroom Field Work
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this program only open to English teachers?
No. English, Social Studies and Science teachers are particularly encouraged to attend and will receive first priority, but all certificated staff members may participate if space allows.
Do I have to pay for the program?
No. Teachers accepted into the program will not have to pay anything.
Will I be paid my curriculum rate to attend?
No. Teachers will be compensated with either SUHSD units, which will help them move up on the pay scale, or will also receive a stipend and two Chromebooks once they complete the Academy.
Who will teach the classes?
Seminars will be taught by NDNU Instructors as well as SUHSD teachers who have already earned Reading Certificates or Reading Specialist degrees.
