Film as Literature

Summer 2016 Online

My name is Cameron Wilson, and I am an assistant professor of English here at WJU.

Let me begin by saying that I'm thrilled to be teaching this class! As I hope will be apparent during this course, I have a deep and abiding love for cinema. For me, a good film is, in many ways, like a good piece of music, a good song, play, or novel -- it's a way to be intellectually challenged, mentally and spiritually engaged. Film may provide an experience that is foreign to us, tell us something we didn't know we knew, offer catharsis, or just help us see the world in a new and exciting way. My hope is that by the end of this course your appreciation for the art and craft behind good filmmaking will be enriched, and you'll be able to read films in a way that opens them up to rich layers of meaning.

Be sure to begin by completing these steps:

  • Work through the Jessup Online Student Orientation.
  • Download and thoroughly read the course syllabus.
  • Post on the Introductions Discussion Forum so we can get to know each other a bit!

After you've completed these tasks, you can move ahead with your Week 1 course materials.
