The Literacy Indicators were adapted from NCDPI to support teachers' reflective practice and intentional use of best practices when providing literacy instruction. These indicators can also support LETRS professional learning as educators connect that professional learning to classroom practices. Each month, we will spot light a different indicator.
Comprehension Indicator
Check out the Comprehension Iiteracy indicator to view examples of best practice comprehension instruction. Within our core curriculums, comprehension instruction can be found within the reading workshop lessons of HMH and the read-write-discuss and read-aloud portions of ARC.
Educators can also use this checklist version of the form for planning and reflection.
DPS Curriculum and Instruction
Visit DPS Central to find curriculum resources (At-a-Glance Documents, Curriculum Overviews, and Curriculum Maps) and select from a menu of school based support services offered by the C&I Department.
The DPS Early Literacy Toolkit provides overviews of particular legislative components of the Excellent Public Schools Act of 2021. The overviews include a description of the component, frequently asked questions, helpful links, training options, and additional support resources. The Toolkit is a live document that will be updated throughout the year.
ELA Elementary ESL Corner
Have you ever been unsure of how to grade an English Learner in your class? How do you measure your students’ mastery of the content so that they will be able to accurately show what they learned? How do we ensure that we’re being fair to all students in our assessment and grading practices? To fairly grade ELs, we must position them to be able to access our instruction.
- Please check out our “Issues and Solutions for Grading ELs” for some suggestions for how to approach grading in Quarter 2 and beyond. For more research and recommendations on this topic, these brief articles share more info:
