High School Patterns Science in a Virtual Environment

Patterns Science for High School: Orientation, NGSS Pedagogy, and Distance Learning Resource

The Patterns Science Curriculum is composed of three NGSS-aligned year long course curricula for high school Physics, Chemistry, and Biology courses. In this session, Caitlin will orient participants to the resources and share how they can be used in a variety of ways (from full sequence implementation to utilization of individual units and lessons), share key pedagogical shifts in the NGSS that Patterns curriculum and pedagogy support, and highlight unit plans and strategies that have been created by the Patterns development team to support teachers across the state who need to implement comprehensive distance learning and hybrid teaching in the fall.


Intended Outcomes for the Session

-Learn about effective curricular resources and strategies that you can use to implement distance and hybrid learning in the fall

-Gain an understanding of the Patterns Science curricula and how you can use the resources in your classroom, school, and/or district

-Learn strategies to engage all learners in the science and engineering practices through phenomena-driven and culturally responsive approaches to instruction.

A little bit about Caitlin….

Caitlin Everett is the K-12 Science TOSA (Teacher on Special Assignment) with the Beaverton School District. In this position Caitlin has led science curriculum adoption, planned and implemented district STEM programs, and led development of and co-written the Patterns High School Science Sequence curriculum aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). She also serves as a science professional development instructor, supporting teachers and students across the state in science education. She is passionate about equity and implementation of culturally relevant and rigorous science education for all. Prior to her role as STEM TOSA, Caitlin taught biology and chemistry in Beaverton middle and high schools. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and a Master of Education, both from the University of Oregon.


There is no fee for attending this session. The UVSH will also pay a $100 stipend for attending the session and participating in a follow-up PLC to be scheduled this fall to support your work.
