Message from Executive Director Jason Ulbrich on Solar Eclipse Safety
If you have been anywhere near the news or internet, you must be aware that there will be a solar eclipse on Monday, April 8. Minnesotans will have a partial view of the eclipse with a peak that begins at 2:02 p.m. and ends at 3:14 p.m.
A partial solar eclipse is an exciting and very infrequent event. It occurs when the moon partially blocks the sun’s disk as viewed from Earth. During a partial solar eclipse, the moon moves between the sun and Earth, but it doesn’t completely cover the sun. As a result, observers in the eclipse’s path see a portion of the sun’s disk covered by the moon. The extent of the coverage depends on the specific geometry of the eclipse and the observer’s location. This is called the path of totality. Entering the United States in Texas, the path of totality will cross 13 states including Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and finally, Maine. Eclipse coverage will be about 75% in Minnesota.
An eclipse can be a captivating astronomical event to witness. However, there are safety considerations and potential dangers associated with observing a solar eclipse.
- Eye safety: Looking directly at the sun can cause severe eye damage. It is crucial to use certified ISO solar viewing glasses or solar filters on cameras, telescopes, and binoculars.
- Indirect viewing: If you do not have certified glasses, you can still view the partial solar eclipse indirectly. One method is by using a pinhole projector. This allows you to view the sun’s image projected on a piece of paper, without looking directly at the sun.
As an academic institution, Eagle Ridge Academy values science literacy. We believe it is important for our students to have real-life experiences and understand scientific concepts. While some Minnesota schools and libraries are providing viewing options using approved ISO solar-eclipse glasses, there have been many cases of forgery and sales of counterfeit glasses - some even containing a fraudulent certification stamp. Eagle Ridge Academy cannot take the risk of students viewing the partial solar eclipse without guaranteed safety. After serious consideration, Eagle Ridge Academy will take a cautious approach:
- There will be no outside school activities from 2:00 p.m. until the end of the school day.
- Teachers may choose to have eclipse viewing parties in their classroom via the internet.
- School of Grammar students will be dismissed from class at 3:08 p.m. to buses and car pickup.
- Lastly, If you would like to keep your child home to experience the event, we will excuse student absences beginning at 12:00 p.m. If you choose to use this option, we insist you pick up your children by 1:30 p.m. to ensure they make it to the office in time and to avoid a backup in the pickup line.
Please enjoy learning together as a family about this great event and stay safe!
Sincerely,
Jason Ulbrich
Executive Director

2024-25 Transportation Information - Complete Change in Transportation Form by April 15
Transportation planning for 2024-25 has begun. Eagle Ridge Academy is excited to announce we will be adding a new tool for parents for transportation communication and route tracking. We have purchased an application called Here Comes the Bus. This application will provide real-time tracking of bus locations and faster communication of any delays directly from MTN dispatch. Parents can download the application to their phone and use the school code to connect to their child’s bus route.
The Academy has worked hard to keep transportation affordable for our families. Since the fall of 2018, we have absorbed the increasing costs of transportation and have not implemented an increase in transportation fees. However, as costs for transportation continue to rise, it is necessary to increase the transportation fee for the first time in six years. The transportation fee for the 2024-25 school year will be $450 per student, with a family cap of $1125. Many of the surrounding charter schools have higher per student transportation fees or limit bussing to the resident school district where their building is located.
The Academy offers a hub transportation system with centrally located stops within communities and does not schedule stops for individual home addresses. To build routes that will best serve the Academy, we need your timely participation.
If you wish to be included in the routing for the 2024-25 school year and are NOT currently using Academy-provided transportation, please complete a Change in Transportation form by April 15. We also ask that you complete the form if you wish to discontinue using the Academy-provided transportation for the 2024-25 school year. If there is no change to your transportation, no action is required.
Transportation contracts for 2024-25 will be available on the Academy’s website on June 1. Signed Transportation Contracts with full payment must be submitted by July 1. Once the completed contract is signed and the full payment is received, your child will be assigned a bus route. Final bus routes will be based on contracts received by July 1.
We are unable to guarantee transportation for your child(ren) if the Transportation Contract and full payment are not received by July 1. Contracts and/or payments received after July 1 will be assessed as a $50 per student late fee and students will be added to transportation as space allows.
For questions regarding transportation, please contact Karen Conner, Operations Manager, at kconner@eagleridgeacademy.org.

Greeters Needed for Gryphon Greeter Program
One year ago, Eagle Ridge Academy launched a pilot program, the Gryphon Greeter Program, as a welcome initiative for families new to Eagle Ridge Academy. It was a test program to determine if families brand new to the Academy would benefit from having a dedicated ERA parent assigned to them as a liaison and guide. The purpose of the Gryphon Greeter Program is to create a warm, inviting culture and climate for new families that fosters immediate connections within the ERA community and deepens knowledge of and commitment to Classical education.
The program was piloted following last year’s lottery by 12 seasoned parent and/or teacher champions of ERA who served as guides for randomly chosen families during their first year at ERA. While not every family felt the need to have extra support, a significant number found it extremely valuable. Therefore, we will continue the program going forward. This year we hope to offer a Gryphon Greeter to every family new to Eagle Ridge Academy. With your help, we can do it.
We are looking for 10-15 additional greeters to join our team as we welcome new families for the 2024-25 school year. If you are passionate about Eagle Ridge Academy and Classical education, are engaged in the community, have been here for two or more years, and would like to serve as a champion of Eagle Ridge Academy by positively encouraging new families, answering questions, and serving as a general resource, you are welcome to apply here.
Any questions may be directed to Kelly Schiffman at kschiffman@eagleridgeacademy.org.

Classical Corner
ERA Teachers Attend National Symposium for Classical Education in Arizona
Once again as Minnesota sat in snow, a team of ERA teachers were enjoying themselves in the sun of Phoenix at the National Symposium for Classical Education. Each year, ERA sends a team of teachers to this national conference, and each year teachers return moved by its Classical offerings. This year, with the focus of Renewing the Great Conversation, the main sessions were sure to inspire all with titles including Rescuing Socrates: How the Great Books Changed My Life and Why They Matter for a New Generation, Teachers as Intellectuals, Not Technicians, Human Flourishing: Access to the Treasures of the Classical Tradition, and Classical Education: Cultivating the Leaders the World Needs.
Featured panels tackled the challenges facing Classical education today, the cultivation of hearts and minds, and practical ways to bring Classical education alive in the classroom. Experts in their field offered engaging breakout sessions covering academic, virtue, and leadership topics K-12. Agendas were full, but here are just some of the sessions our ERA educators said stood out:
- Clare Murray (School of Grammar First Grade): Fostering Math Fact Fluency
- Jason Ulbrich (Executive Director): ChatGPT and Classical Education
- Emily Molnar (Instructional Coach): Rescuing Socrates: How the Great Books Changed My Life and Why They Matter for a New Generation
- Jonathan Good (School of Rhetoric Humane Letters): Book Bans: Separating Facts From Fiction
- Mandee Gordon (Intervention): Strengthening Literacy Skills Through Poetry
While our teachers gleaned important insights through the varied sessions, we are even more eager to have them share all they learned with the ERA community upon their return!
