Principal's Message
Summer 2017
Dear GHS Student and Parent(s):
It sounds incredible, but this summer will mark a new chapter in our history of serving the young persons and families in our community! In August we will welcome our students to the 2017-18 school year. This year will mark the 101st year of tradition and excellence here at Gilbert High School. As Tigers, we are all part of a legacy rich with achievement, scholarship and community. I again want to welcome you to this new school year. I am excited to go on this journey with you all!
One last look back: I would like to congratulate and send best wishes to the Class of 2017; they are a truly special class who reflect their predecessors across the generations and decades. I would also like to thank all of our young persons, regardless of grade level, who each and every day work hard to make GHS an outstanding school. They all enrich our campus community and please know that they are most appreciated indeed!
School will start next year on Wednesday, August 2, 2017. Last year was an amazing year and I have been consistently impressed with the quality of our young persons on campus. They make Gilbert High School a special place for students to learn and for adults to work.
We look forward to another positive and productive year at GHS. Our campus has added some new faces to our faculty and staff, and we are excited to work with all of you and help our students achieve the success that is typical of Gilbert High School. As always, I expect our students to be positive reflections of our community and our high expectations. Their academic success and their behavior will continue will to shed a positive on our campus community.
In some leadership news, Gilbert Public Schools will be undergoing a search this summer for a new Superintendent. I look forward to getting to know whoever the selected candidate is and I cannot wait to show them just how awesome the students, faculty, staff and parents are at Gilbert High School!
On behalf of the faculty and staff here at Gilbert High School, we welcome you again to this new school year and we wish you and your student all the best!
Go Tigers!
Sincerely,
Christopher Stroud
Principal

Travel Abroad
Teachers and students are readily preparing for their 11 day summer trip to Italy. Highlights include Venice and the Grand Canal, Florence, and Rome. The students have been able to use tax credit money to help fund this amazing trip. Is your son or daughter interested in traveling abroad next summer? Every summer, teachers and students take a trip to a foreign country. The 2018 summer tour is headed to the South Pacific, including New Zealand, Australia and Fiji on a 12-day tour. Those highlights include Auckland and Rotarua, New Zealand. We will be learning about the Maori culture, while visiting the natural wonders of New Zealand. We will then fly to Sydney, Australia to see the city from the 1,063 foot observation deck of Sydney Tower. The next stop is Bondi Beach to get an up-close visit with Koalas and Kangaroos at Wild Life Sydney Zoo. Our visit rounds out with a harbor cruise with a view of the famous Sydney Harbor. From Sydney we will fly to Fiji, an island nation in the South Pacific. We will spend a day with the local Nayawa Community prior to touring the island, which was first settled by the British in 1874. Fiji is famous for white-sand beaches, crystal clear ocean waters, coral reefs, tropical rainforests and jutting volcanic mountains. Enrollment information is available from Ms. Ciccarone in the English Department.
Gilbert High School Japanese Program has a wonderful opportunity to embark on a fun and educational adventure to Japan. This trip will be on June 21st through July 1st, 2017. We are going to visit Osaka, Hiroshima, Kyoto, near Mount Fuji, and Tokyo with Tea Ceremony and Kimono wearing experience to feel the best immersion opportunity with Japanese culture to date. This trip’s goal is to give all participants the best experience for a lifetime of memories!

No Place For Hate
ADL RECOGNIZES ARIZONA SCHOOLS WITH
NO PLACE FOR HATE® DESIGNATION
Phoenix Arizona, May 3, 2017, …The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has named 35 Arizona schools with the No Place for Hate designation. These schools are recognized for creating safe and respectful learning environments, bringing awareness to the issues of bullying and bias throughout the 2016-2017 school year.
The 2016-17 No Place for Hate® Celebration with activity fair and formal banner presentation will take place on Thursday, May 4, 2017, at the Phoenix College Auditorium, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
At this celebration, ADL will also announce their Educator of the Year award to Sarah Steele, a teacher at both Trailside Point Performing Arts Academy and Paseo Point in Laveen Elementary School District. Under Sarah’s direction, ADL has seen great strides and a true commitment to integrating No Place for Hate activities through classroom discussions, family interaction and campus beautification.
ADL’s No Place for Hate initiative provides schools and communities with an organizing framework for combating bias, bullying and hatred, leading to long-term solutions for creating and maintaining a positive climate.
No Place for Hate schools receive their designation by building inclusive and safe communities in which respect is the goal, and all students can thrive; empowering students, faculty, administration and family members to take a stand against hate and bullying by incorporating new and existing programs under one powerful message; engaging schools and communities in at least three anti-bias activities per year, which ADL helps to develop; and sending a clear, unified message that all students have a place to belong.
“This celebration is an opportunity to recognize No Place for Hate partners for their year-long commitment to creating safe, respectful and inclusive school communities,” said ADL Arizona Regional Director, Carlos Galindo-Elvira. “This Initiative celebrates diversity and offers students tools and skills to succeed in a continually changing world.”
In Arizona, the Initiative is generously supported by the Arizona Republic – Season for Sharing, Cox Charities, Desert Schools Federal Credit Union, Phoenix Suns Charities, and Wells Fargo.
