A Biography about Julia Gillard
Julia Gillard is the 27th Prime Minister of Australia and the only female to ever hold the position.
Early Life
Julia Gillard was born in Wales, England in 1961 and migrated to Australia in 1966.
Labour Party
Prime Minister Gillard became involved in the Labor Party in her 2nd year of University. She was elected as a member from Lalor, near Melbourne.
Kevin Rudd
On Kevin Rudd's ticket, she was elected as Deputy Prime Minister, but with the backing of her party in 2010 she ousted him to become Australia's first female prime minister.
Issues
Ms. Gillard had trouble in the 2010 election and only gained a majority by working with the Independents. There was a call within the party to bring Kevin Rudd back, but Julia was not overthrown. Two issues which have dogged her are the Carbon Tax and Asylum Seekers.
