Farwell High School: Only School in County to Earn B
Consistent with prior report cards and most educational research, the statistical results from their analysis show that the percentage of students eligible for free lunch is negatively correlated to a school’s average test scores. In other words, the more students eligible for a free lunch, the lower the high school’s average score on standardized tests tend to be.
A CAP Score below 100 indicates that a high school’s average score was below its predicted level, given student poverty, while a CAP Score above 100 indicates a high school’s average score exceeded its predicted level, given student poverty. The CAP Scores were also used to assign letter grades to each school. The letter grades were based on a standard bell curve distribution, with the top 10 percent of schools receiving A’s, the next 20 percent receiving B’s, the next 40 percent receiving C’s, the following 20 percent receiving D’s and the last 10 percent receiving F’s.
These grades and CAP Scores are relative; they are not based on an absolute standard of academic performance. Instead, they indicate how each high school compares to other high schools on multiple years of standardized tests given the school’s respective student population. By definition, the average of the scores for all of the public high schools in the state will be 100, corresponding to a C.
Finally, a percentile rank was also calculated for each CAP Score. This rank is the percentage of schools each high school outperformed. For example, if a school’s percentile rank is 79 percent, this means that school’s relative performance was better than 79 percent of the schools included in this report card. This provides an easy method for comparing high schools.

Strive for a Safer Drive (S4SD) Grant
Strive for a Safer Drive (S4SD) is a teen driving initiative aimed at reducing serious traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities among Michigan’s most inexperienced drivers – teens. It is presented by Ford Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) and the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP). Clare-Gladwin RESD, through the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program, was selected a grant awardee which means FHS students are helping to lead the event. The kickoff assembly included a lead role from Chloe McMann, FHS Student. "Chloe presented to the entire CTE staff and students during the assembly and did an outstanding job," said Tom House. The CTE Criminal Justice Program received $1,000 to develop and implement a student-led, peer-to-peer traffic safety awareness campaign that will occur over the next couple months at all CG-RESD schools.
Farwell HS is eligible if awarded the top CG-RESD school in the CTE competition, to provide students a free hands-on driving assembly with professional driving instructors. During the half-day Ride & Drive Event, where students would learn key skills and gain experience in the areas that contribute to more than 60 percent of teen crashes, including: hazard recognition, vehicle handling, speed and space management, distracted and impaired driving. CG-RESD is one of 62 Michigan high schools to benefit from efforts to make teenagers safer drivers by participating in Strive For a Safer Drive (S4SD). The peer-led traffic safety campaign seeks to reduce traffic crashes which are the leading cause of death for teens.
Another success with the S4SD grant comes from our very own, Mrs. Teresa Mackie. An amazing story was shared with FHS about Mrs. Mackie during the Distracted Driving Assembly. She agreed to tell them her story about her recent car accident and her long recovery process. Mrs. Mackie stood in front of all the students, staff, and law enforcement officers and shared the details of her accident and the personal medical issues that occurred, including her speech impairment. She did a great job of tying the S4SD message, "it only takes a second," into her story. Mrs. Katie Knapp-Wyman stated, "It was the most powerful moment of the day."
