The Roanoke Sound

Where is the Roanoke Sound?
The Roanoke sound is located in the Outer Banks on the eastern most side of NC.
Why are estuaries important?
Estuaries have been called the "nurseries of the sea" because the protected environment and abundant food provide an ideal location for fish and shellfish to reproduce. Most commercially important fish species spend some part of their life cycle in estuaries.

What "feeds" my estuary?
This body of water shares imaginary boundaries with the Croatan Sound, the Albemarle Sound, the Pamlico Sound, and even the Atlantic Ocean via the Oregon Inlet, making it one of the most connected bodies of water along Eastern North Carolina.
What thrives here?
Swamps and marshes along the edges of the coast provide feeding grounds and shelter for fish, oysters, clams, and shellfish. Also Cypress, tupelo, and swamp maple trees grow in swamp forests.
Are we endanger!?
Yes, climate change and rising water do make it a risk to stay here. Also, we have many endangered species that pollutants may kill. But until something terrible happens lets just enjoy the view.
