ATTENDANCE MATTERS
If children don’t show up for school regularly, they miss out on fundamental reading and math skills and the chance to build a habit of good attendance that will carry them into high school, college and the professional world. Missing just 2 days per month or 18 days per school year (10%) is considered chronic absenteeism. Chronic absenteeism, whether excused for illness/medical reasons or family vacations add up to lost time in the classroom. Poor attendance can leave students struggling both academically and behaviorally. It often results in less meaningful connections with peers and adults at school which are an important building block for academic success.
WHAT FAMILIES CAN DO
Talk about the importance of regular attendance and how your child feels about school.
Build regular routines for homework, bedtime and morning—Children thrive when they have a schedule. It is always best to prepare for school before bedtime rather than in the morning
Don’t permit missing school unless your child is truly sick. Use a thermometer to check their temperature. Fever is considered a temperature above 100.0 F. Your child must be fever free without the use of medicine for 24 hours before they can return to school. Remember, headaches and stomach aches may be signs of anxiety.
Avoid medical/dental appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
