Bear Bulletin
December 1, 2017
Message from Dr. Kaminski
Today we mark the first day of December and, as always, it just feels like time is traveling far too fast. The next few weeks are busy ones, so here is what we have in store for our BSE Bears.
First, we will begin the winter NWEA testing session on Monday. Our students may not begin testing right away, but the window opens, so expect your child to take the reading and math NWEA assessment on their iPad with their teacher soon. This test is not timed, can be paused as many times as necessary, and our teachers are working hard to ensure a peaceful and focused testing environment for all students. HSE will send out reports for testing following the testing window.
Second, I am super excited to remind everyone that next week is the official Hour of Code (December 4-8 during Computer Science Education Week). Our students will have extra special coding opportunities, coding guides from the high school, and access to a variety of coding tools. Feel free to join in at home!
As you know, our students are involved in a S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) class during their specials rotation each four days. Recently a group of teachers and I researched needed tools for our S.T.E.M. classes. I am excited to announce that we will have some new and amazing resources for kids during the 2nd semester. They include 3D printers, a new set of Sphero robots, Hummingbird robotics kits, a handful of Rasberry Pi, and Apple TVs for our new flat screen TVs in the hallways. It is our goal to provide our students with the tools to be creative and innovative. We want each of our students to have a unified understanding of coding/robotics potential before they enter the intermediate grade levels. These tools will also allow students who show strong interest an opportunity to explore further and as far as they so desire.
Finally, we have plans to begin sharing information, in a variety of formats, with our Chinese partners (Guangji Central Primary, Ningbo China) who are THE premier S.T.E.M. school in their province. We have an exciting second semester around S.T.E.M. and hope you see this energy transfer to home. If you are a S.T.E.M. professional, in any capacity, and want to share or work with our students, please contact me!
Dr. Kaminski
Due to NWEA testing, we will not be having lunch visitors from 12/4 through 12/20

Science Club Launches Second Weather Balloon
Students watch as a weather balloon inflates.
The weather balloon is on its way!
The BSE Science Club recently launched their second weather balloon of the year. The club worked with Dr. Howard Brooks of DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. BSE students placed experiments into a payload container that was attached to each balloon. These items were sent up into the stratosphere. Once the payload was back on earth, students could see if there was any difference in their experiments and compare their items to others they had kept on earth.
The first balloon reached a height of 90,697 feet before popping. It landed in a corn field outside of Celina, Ohio. The second balloon was launched three weeks later. It reached an altitude of 100,570 feet and landed in some trees in Delaware, Ohio. Students had an enjoyable time and learned many new and interesting things from this project.
