Fast Facts about NWEA
All SMS students will take NWEA tests in Math, Reading, and Language Usage. Each test takes between 45 and 90 minutes. We will take our first test on Tuesday, August 27th. Students are expected to give best effort on every assessment. Results will be used to guide classroom instruction and also to identify students for remediation and enrichment. Math and LA teachers will help students with practice activities this week.
App News
All students need to have operational Eventlink accounts by the end of this week. If you already have an account, log in and update the calendars that you want to follow (Manage Calendars). If you are new to SMS, follow the Eventlink tutorial on the SMS Canvas Community page.
eHallPass
All students need to have an operational eHallPass account by Wednesday. This tutorial is also available on the Community page. Note: Pay close attention to how you set up your frequent pass locations. We will use the room/teacher format, not the teacher name format. Example: to see Mr. Heacock, select 205/Heacock.
Hero Points
SMS staff will start giving Hero Points to students that demonstrate the Warrior Essentials next week. To track your own personal points, follow the Hero tutorial in the Community page. This tutorial will be available later this week.
How We Do It...
If you are absent, we want a home adult to call us the morning of your absence. Home adults will be asked the nature of the absence because absence codes (illness, documented medical appointment, personal, bereavement, etc.) are attached to every absence. If a home adult does not contact us, the absence is coded 'truant.' Truant absences that are not recoded by home adult contact result in a suspension demerit. Students- if you miss a day of school, ask your home adult if a call was made. If not, bring a note to Mrs. Walsh in the office the first day you return to school.
Bus Notes
Students wishing to be dropped off at another bus stop or wishing to ride a different bus, must show the driver a yellow bus pass. To get a bus pass, bring notes from both parent/guardians involved in the change (the parent saying that their kid can go somewhere different AND the parent saying the kid can come to their house). These notes must be turned in to Mrs. Manns in the office by noon. She will check with drivers about bus space and she will write passes that will be given to approved students at 2:50. Remember that school buses are not personal transportation. Bus notes should be limited to one person at a time and should be limited to special occasions or emergency child care needs.
Pledge of Allegiance
SMS students lead the pledge every morning. If you would like to lead the observance, swing by the office and ask Mrs. Walsh for the pledge calendar. Sign up for the date(s) you'd like to lead. Students may lead the pledge up to one time per month. Thanks to those who step up and help out! You'll be reminded the afternoon before your pledge day. Report to the office at 8:00 on your pledge day.
