Dissection Fun in H.E.A.R.T. Class
Over the last few weeks, the students in Mrs. Asoklis’ Mark Twain H.E.A.R.T. classes have been learning about the human body. They understand how important a healthy body is to a healthy life. With this knowledge, students can choose to eat healthy, get enough exercise and plenty of rest to keep their bodies working efficiently. As our culminating activity, the boys and girls were able to dissect/investigate the anatomy of the sheep heart, lungs and eyes.
The 2nd graders were excited to show off their surgical gloves prior to investigating the sheep eyes. In 2nd grade the students learned how the pupil works and had fun watching their pupils change size as the lights went on and off. They were also able to view the cornea, iris, lens and the optic nerve.
The 5th graders had fun inflating the sheep lungs, while also understanding the route that oxygen/carbon dioxide travels in and out of their lungs… through the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. The students enjoyed this experience and took many pictures on their iPads to show to their families.
The 6th graders have been learning about the heart! They were able to view the aorta, atrium, ventricles and the septum of the sheep heart, along with inflating the lungs. The students know that taking good care of their heart (exercising, eating healthy and getting enough sleep) is so very important to a healthy life!
Canvas Learning Management System & Parent Meetings
As you know, this year all students, grades Young 5s-12 began using Canvas, a learning management system that replaced BlackBoard and itsLearning. We are excited for the opportunity to have a consistent system for families to access student learning. At the secondary level (Grades 7-12), parents will also be able to see student assignments and grades at the same time.
We have worked for the last year to prepare for this transition. Classroom teachers are using Canvas to provide instruction, resources, activities, and assessments for students.
Students have also been using Canvas, and we will be launching the parent component this Monday, October 3. With your parent account, you will be able to easily view the assignments and grades for your student(s).
Please look for another email Monday with the instructions to create your account. We will also host two parent webinars to walk through all Canvas can do. Please try to attend whichever session fits your schedule. They should last about an hour.

Halloween Around Twain
- Parade: A short "Halloween Parade" will take place beginning at 10:00AM on Monday, October 31st. Weather permitting, we will parade out the main doors and around the building. Our Y5s & kindergarten students will lead the parade around each classroom and then out around the building. All are welcome to come and watch our costume parade outdoors!
- Classroom Activities: Classrooms/grade levels will be planning for Halloween activities and celebrations individually, either before or after the parade. If teachers request parent volunteers to help facilitate the classroom activities, all volunteers will have to submit a Background Check.
- Costumes: Students may come to school in costume on Monday, October 31st. They can stay in costume for the duration of the day. Costumes need to be school appropriate and cannot depict violence or excess blood/gore. No fake weapons are allowed in school (i.e. toy guns, swords, blades, etc). Costume masks can be worn for the parade, but not throughout the day. For costumes that have short skirts/shorts, leggings or pants need to be worn underneath.
Lunch Aides Needed!
Lunch aides are needed every M-F. These are paid positions and applicants must be capable of going outside in temperatures above 10 degrees. Interested candidates should contact Mr. Tonn at (586)439-6900 and complete an application HERE. We look forward to hearing from you!

Parking Lot Reminders
- The North lot is NOT a drop-off/ pick-up zone. It is for parking only. We MUST keep the loop open for busses and emergency vehicles. This rule applies to everyone, so please be cooperative and follow it.
- The large, central lot has two lanes: a drop-off/ pick-up lane on the outside of the loop and a driving lane on the inside.
- Please note: Drivers MAY NOT get out of your car while in the outside drop-off/ pick-up lane. Your students must exit to the outside of the loop, and drivers must not exit the car to walk students up or pick them up. If you have younger children who need to be walked up or picked up at the door, you MUST park your car in one of the lots or on the street.
- Smoking and pets are not permitted on school grounds. Please leave your pets at home for the safety and comfort of all of our students and families.
Attendance Matters...
This year, we're working hard to advance student success by reducing chronic absenteeism. At the end of each month, our team will be reviewing student attendance and will be setting up meetings with families whose students have missed 10% of our school days. During these meetings, we will be creating success plans in an effort to help improve student attendance.
Students who miss 2 days of school in September often go on to become chronically absent. To maintain satisfactory attendance and to create good attendance habits that can last a lifetime, students should strive to miss no more than 9 days per year (or less than 1 day per month).
