Thank you to the parents serving on the O.C. Taylor Vision Committee! We met last Monday evening and created a draft vision statement for our future work. This next month we will be working on a draft of our mission statement. The committee members will also be traveling around the metroplex this month to see highlighted schools of choice. These schools have unique and different programming. We are hoping to discover and gain inspiration from these schools as we craft our dream school!
As always, my email inbox is open. Let me know what your little Tiger needs!
To the greatest of days,
Principal Young

A Note from our librarian, Mrs. Bonacci
Would you like FREE audio books for your family?
Studies show the importance of building vocabulary to improve reading proficiency and student achievement. In fact the root cause of reading problems is a lack of vocabulary. Students who are read to for five minutes each day add approximately 282,000 words to their vocabulary per year. Compare this to the 1,800,000 words per year that students are exposed to when they are read to for 20 minutes every day and you can see the obvious advantage these students have over their peers!
Audiobooks are a great way students can increase their vocabulary. Click here to learn how you and your family can access free audiobooks.

GCISD DISTRICT FLYERS & INFORMATION
2017-18 School Calendar Survey
Many of you have asked about the 2017-2018 school calendar, so I wanted to provide you a brief update on its status. On Thursday, January 12, the district included in the LEADer, the district's e-newsletter, a link to a brief survey that asks four questions regarding the student-teacher calendar. In case you missed it, I have included a link to the survey below. These questions will help us determine what is most important for our parents, teachers, students and community members. The survey will be open until 4 p.m. on Friday, January 20. Once the district has collected the information, a proposed calendar will be recommended to the District Excellence Committee prior to the Board of Trustees vote on Monday, February 27. We are working diligently to finalize the 2017-2018 school calendar and we appreciate your patience as we work to create the best calendar to cultivate student success.
Here are links to the survey - it is available in English and Spanish, and there is a staff and parent/community survey. Please be sure to send the link to each respective group so that we may collect their feedback:

Summer Enrichment Brochure Art Contest:
GCISD students of all ages are invited to create artwork illustrating the fun learning opportunities available through GCISD’s Summer Enrichment Program. This year’s theme is “Rockin' Through the Summer.” The winning artwork will serve as the cover design for the GCISD Summer Enrichment brochure, which will be posted on the website and provides information about registration and summer learning opportunities for students completing K-6th grades. Winning artwork will also be used to promote the Summer Enrichment Program through social media. The student who creates the winning entry will be recognized in the brochure and during a regular meeting of the GCISD Board of Trustees.
Art must be original and can be hand-drawn, painted, computer-designed or in any other medium. Judges will be looking for a design that is creative, appropriate and uses the “Rockin' Through the Summer” theme. Art should be on 8 ½” x 11” paper and submitted in color, but be able to be reproduced in black and white. Student's full name, school, grade and teacher's name should be on the BACK of the artwork. Please do not frame or mat entry to any size larger than 8 ½” x 11”. Our contest opened January 9, 2017, and the deadline for submitting the art is Friday, February 10th. Students should submit entries to our campus art teacher, Mrs. Morgan.
