LOHS student selected as featured composer by state music group

For the second time, Lake Orion High School student Sam Critchley has been selected as a featured composer by the Michigan Music Education Association's Young Composers of Michigan.

Sam, who is a sophomore at LOHS, is an extremely talented musician and composer. The selection is indeed a very high honor for him, especially as he is receiving it for the second time.

His music will be performed live at the Michigan Music Conference to be held this coming January in Grand Rapids.

A great OAA Red League meet for Lake Orion as our team finished 4th with 93% of the best times overall. Swimmers competed in 3 relays which qualified them for states. 3 swimmers will be going for 2 more individual events, and 3 divers will be competing at MHSAA regional qualifier this Thursday, November 10th at Oxford to try and advance to the state finals. Coach Kornburger says, she is "so incredibly proud to coach this great group of ladies. Their hard work and determination is awesome. Can’t wait to see what we accomplish at the D1 MHSAA state meet in 2 weeks! We are just getting started...#FIREDUP"

Ashland Falls is written by Steven Stack, a professor at Wayne State University, who has written many plays. Ashland Falls takes place in a current day setting, where a local thespian Troupe receives a mysterious script in the mail to world premiere, and a brand-new set is delivered. Everything seems to be going well, until their director disappears, and a new director shows up. The new director seems to be a little too close to the story that is being performed. The students not only battle with normal everyday teen drama, but also dealing with the problems that arise when the new director takes charge. Ashland falls features a cast where they are playing two very different characters. It also features a murder mystery aspect and could have a few major twists and turns along the way!

Governor Gretchen Whitmer launched a new webpage to help the graduating class of 2023 apply for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship and lower their cost of college by thousands of dollars a year. Students should talk to their parents or guardian, gather documents, and fill out their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible to save up to $8,250 over three years as they earn their associate degree at a community college, up to $20,000 over five years at a private college, or up to $27,500 over five years at a public university.

Just a reminder that Sendmoneytoschool.com has been replaced by lakeorion.familyportal.cloud. Please visit the site to set up a lunch account for your student. Throughout the month, the North Oakland Community Coalition and Youth Action Board are running their annual No Vape November campaign. LOHS students will learn ways they can protect their physical, mental, and emotional health by knowing the risks associated with vaping nicotine and marijuana. This campaign utilizes educational table displays, an interactive straw challenge, trivia games, and No Vape November bingo boards to engage students in this important conversation and give them the tools they need to make healthy decisions for themselves. Please ask your student what they think of these activities and encourage them to participate. This is also a great time to start a family conversation about thoughts, feelings, and expectations regarding youth substance use!

Just a reminder for both parents and students regarding procedures and policies for medication at LOHS.

Whether prescribed by a doctor or over-the-counter, the administration of medication is regulated by formal district policies. If it is necessary for a student to take medication at school, it may be administered by LOHS Staff in the main office, or self-administered by the student. Regardless, in either case, a corresponding consent form must be on file in the attendance office. Also, meds must be in their original pharmacy container. For prescription medications, the label should show the name of the student, strength, dosage, and other relevant information.

Term 2 is here, and we're starting the new quarter by adding Thursday editions of LO-AM! Starting this week, we'll produce the show on most Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. LO-AM continues to air at the regular time at the very start of 4th hour. Please kindly remember our story request deadline is 7:00am on show days; you can submit requests directly to this email account.

How about Winter Sports?

Each year, Mrs. Dobbs runs the LOHS Ski and Snowboard club, if your student is interested in learning more about this, there will be an informational meeting in Room F672 at 2:35 pm on November 8th. Students wanting to participate will need to complete the GAP Club forms and the Pine Know Membership registration at the Pine Knob Ski Club website.

The Dragon Yearbook would like to offer you the opportunity to say goodbye to your graduating senior. Senior parent ads for the 2022-2023 yearbook are being sold until Friday, December 16, 2022. We encourage early submissions, though, because space is limited.

Ads submitted after this deadline cannot be guaranteed a place in the yearbook.

At LOHS, we strive to be intentional about supporting students beyond just academics. To be successful and well-rounded, LOHS proactively seeks to develop each student’s character traits that will serve them well in the future. The school-wide commitment here at LOHS involves recognizing, dignifying, and rewarding students for demonstrating the qualities of Generosity, Responsibility, Integrity, and Tenacity (GRIT). When staff members witness students exemplifying these admirable characteristics, they write out a “ticket” describing the pupil’s positive actions.

GRIT winners are awarded prizes, which greatly enhances this recognition program and creates excitement and enthusiasm among the student body. We are currently looking for donations from local business (or community members). If you or your business are interested in donating to the GRIT program, please reach out to Rosa Everitt. You may also drop off your donations to the main office or Safe Ed. Donation letters are available for tax deductions.

Past donations have included, gift cards to local establishments, candy, LO gear, fidgets, etc.

We have started utilizing School Dismissal Manager (SDM), a program for parents to communicate early student departures. LOHS successfully used the SDM program last year. It is accessible on either computer or smartphone, allowing parents the opportunity to officially submit an early dismissal request without calling the school.

On approximately September 22, you should have received a communication from School Dismissal Manager with additional details. Parents are encouraged to check their designated email accounts. Also, be advised the message might be redirected to your “junk” folders. The welcome email from SDM provides all relevant information necessary to activate and begin using your account.

OK2SAY is available state-wide for public and private schools in Michigan; anybody can submit a confidential tip. Specially trained technicians receive the tips and filter the information to the appropriate agency to provide a timely and effective response.
