Welcome to Centennial Middle School
June 1, 2021-Supporting our Incoming 7th Grade Students #3
Message from the Principal
Welcome Family Night Address_May 26, 2021
Welcome everyone!
We are super excited to see everyone joining our CMS family night. Due to our school closures and hybrid in person model, next year we will be in a building where all of our students will experience CMS for the first time. I know we have some 7th grade students in our building right now but they have not been able to experience switching from class to class and interacting in common spaces like our hallways, gyms, cafeteria, in a more authentic way for middle school. We are hoping that next year we will return to some level of normalcy and students get to enjoy Middle School the way it should be.
There are many new things happening in our building, and it’s not going to be business as usual. We will focus on Social Emotional Learning and ensure that students are provided with opportunities to socialize with each other, since we know that this was one of the greatest losses we had this past year-not just for kids but for our society as a whole. Our community class will provide students with a home base and a teacher they can connect with year round. We will also support students with teaching everyone organizational skills. This past year looked different for all of our students and in order to have a successful transition between home learning to school learning we cannot assume that all students are coming in with the same perception on how school looks like. It is our responsibility to support that transition with school-wide strategies and instructional tools.
We also have some new courses that have not been at CMS in the past. We are introducing AVID which will be held during our PRIDE time and students will receive the additional academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in the school’s courses. We will also have guitar, sports class, 7th grade health, fitness for life, and fitness aerobics...courses that we are more familiar to us include music careers, band, and choir. Of course your student’s schedule will also have PE, ELA, Math, Scie, & social studies. The heart of our school is undoubtedly our teachers and staff. They alongside Mr. Buck and I are ready and eager to start a school year that I’m sure will present it’s unique challenges but as a cougar nation we are ready to take them on.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to us to make connections, learn what CMS is all about and get any questions you have answered. We are here to support you along the way.
Kind Regards,
Johanna Castillo

NEW!! Communication Post 6th Grade Family Orientation 5/26/2021
May 28, 2021
Many thanks to everyone that was able to make our 7th Grade Family Orientation night this past Wednesday May 26, 2021. It was exciting to see many families joining and I hope that the information provided is beneficial to support the upcoming school year.
However, we do realize that not all families had the same experience. Some were able to navigate the platform and join our teacher break out rooms according to plan. Others experienced technical difficulties and issues. We profoundly apologize for the inconvenience and frustration you may have experienced. I feel incredibly frustrated and embarrassed about the issues myself, and wish to address them. Our CMS Assistant Principal and I did some investigating to identify what went wrong, and ensure that this does not happen again. Here is what we found out:
Different email addresses: Our guests meeting invitation reflects a Zoom account email address different from the one that organized the meeting (e.g. first_last@csd28j.org was the invited email address, and the user joins from their personal Zoom account associated with name@gmail.com).
Guest (anonymous) participation: The participant has not logged into a Zoom account before joining, and appears as a guest.
Outdated Zoom Account: The participant has an older version of Zoom.
Now that we know this, and since we cannot guarantee or control how guests login to zoom meetings, we will be addressing these issues by:
Not having breakout rooms for family meetings.
Host webinars as opposed to regular zoom meetings.
Host grade level specific meetings.
Host language specific meetings to support translation services.
It is my responsibility and commitment to ensure that our families experience positive and informative meetings. This was the first time we hosted a meeting with break out rooms, and we have since learned a big lesson from it. We appreciate your grace and understanding as we continue to navigate our digital platforms while becoming more proficient in them.
I do not anticipate an end to our virtual meetings, but an increase in accessibility as well as ease. It is touching to see so many families participate in this manner, and it is my promise as principal to continue supporting you all as best as I can.
Thank you.
