Friday December 10th

The first semester of the 2021-22 school year will officially end on Thursday, December 16 – which will be a half day of school. Classes will dismiss for winter break at 12:10 p.m. December 16 is also the day for our winter classroom parties and activities. The tentative time for the celebration is 11:30 a.m. - 12:10 p.m. We are in the process of moving in the direction of having more parents join us for in-person events. For this event, we are requesting two (2) parents per classroom to assist with the teacher ahead of the party as well as during the designated helper time. If you have any interest in being one of the two classroom volunteers, please be on the lookout for communication from your child's teacher. If there are more than two parents per classroom interested in volunteering, then we will draw names.

Please remember, masks are still required indoors at the elementary level. Thank you for your support during first semester. We are looking forward to a fantastic 2022!

Kansas Teacher of the Year

Dear Families,

Please consider nominating your favorite teacher for Kansas Teacher of the Year.

The De Soto School District has been an important and strong participant in the Kansas Teacher of the Year Program for many years. De Soto has had fifteen state finalists and twelve semi-finalists represented in the program since 2000. Two of our very own teachers were chosen as The Kansas Teacher of the Year; Keil Hileman in 2004 and Jeri Powers in 2008. This is truly unprecedented!

We would like for you to nominate any teacher whom you consider to be an outstanding and effective educator and whom you or your child has had as a teacher. This person must be a tenured employee of USD 232. If there is a De Soto educator whom you believe to be outstanding and deserving of special recognition, please fill out the nomination form at www.usd232.org/ktoy

The deadline is noon on Friday, January 14th This year all staff nominations will be though our online nomination form.

Bone Marrow Drive

A student in our Desoto community is in need....while he may not attend Riverview, I did share with the Starside team where he attends we would be happy to help pass along any information. Attached you will find a flyer advertising a bone marrow drive that we are hosting in conjunction with Bethematch at the Hardwood Classic Basketball Tournament being held at DHS next week.

Food Drive

We are always amazed by our generous Riverview Community! With your help, our Girl Scout Troops were able to pack 82 holiday boxes for Harvesters! Altogether, over 1,000 items were donated. The fifth grade class won a free recess with a grand total of 309 donations, but each grade level donated over 100 items. Thank you again for your donations and generosity this holiday season!

Thank you to RE’s 5th grade Girl Scouts for spearheading this food drive and a huge thank you to the other grade level troops for helping to pack the boxes!

Messages From PTA

Looking for the perfect holiday gift for your child's teacher or for that special staff member at Riverview? Don’t forget that the PTA has Staff Favorites and Amazon Classroom Wish Lists available, and the items on these lists make the perfect gifts this time of year! The links to each can be found on the PTA's homepage at https://refalcons.memberhub.com.

More than anything, our Riverview staff truly appreciates cards and notes from students and parents. Below is a link to some free printable cards. Please consider sending in a note for any special staff member that your student works with at RE! https://www.roseclearfield.com/teacher-thank-you-christmas-cards/

BoxTops for Riverview!

Turning in your BoxTops to benefit RE PTA is even easier this year! There are 3 ways you can contribute:

1. Download the app, register your name and choose Riverview Shawnee, KS as the school to send your earnings. After shopping, use the app to scan your receipt. The app will pick up any product that qualifies and automatically credit them to Riverview.

2. Doing online grocery orders with an emailed receipt? Just forward that email to receipts@boxtops4education.com (Important: you must have previously registered through the app to tie your email to your selected school for this option).

3. Physical Box Top clippings can still be turned in as long as they aren’t expired. You can tape them to any sheet of paper or save them in a ziplock bag to send in to school with your child. If you have any questions, please reach out to Stacy Schmidtlein at semontee@hotmail.com.

With most BoxTop products being digital, the app is essential in taking advantage of all potential earnings. Thank you for your support!

Amazon Smile

Did you know your Amazon shopping can benefit Riverview Elementary? Just shop via Amazon Smile at smile.amazon.com/ch/48-1171703 and Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases back to Riverview!

AmazonSmile is the same Amazon you know. Same products, same prices, same service. WIN-WIN for our school!

If you could spare a few......

As we are are gearing up for colder months and weather, we have noticed our extra masks dwindling here in the office. If by chance you have some extra child size disposable masks laying around at home OR have access to extras, Riverview Office staff would gladly take those off of your hands.

I would also like to remind families to please make sure you student is bringing a mask to wear daily! It also would not hurt to have a couple of extra in their backpacks as well.....you never know what the day will bring!

CrossWalk Safety Reminder

Safety First is our motto here at Riverview, which means PLEASE make sure that you walking or you are having your students walk down to the school's designated crosswalk areas. Our 47th street is a VERY busy road, which is why we have designated crosswalk areas that we specifically position staff members there to help with the safety of all students. I wish I had the man power to staff all Riverview community passageways, but that is just not the case. So while it might save you or your kiddos a few extra steps to cut across, that is certainly not a safer option and we need you to cross at the designated crosswalk areas.

Thank you for helping keep our safety at Riverview Top Priority!

Peanut FREE School.....Reminder

Just a friendly reminder that we are a peanut FREE school here at Riverview. With birthday celebrations and upcoming fall parties, I thought I would attach our peanut free approved foods list. Please note that this is a working document and if you find another food or bakery location that meets the peanut free requirements, we would be happy to add that to our list to share out with other families!

Thank you again for helping keep all the kiddos here at RE safe and healthy!

Making a Difference Award

We are blessed to have such amazing staff members here at Riverview! They deserve to be recognized! Through the Great American Bank and our very own USD 232 Education Foundation they are providing you the opportunity to recognize staff members that you feel go above and beyond in their daily interactions with our students. All you need to do is click on the link below and fill out some general information of the deserving nominee. Thank you for helping our staff feel special!
