Donations of the following items to insert into "Blessing Bags" for the patients will be accepted. SPRING CLEANING FOR YOUR BOOK SHELVES
A great activity to do this time of year is clear out all the old books cluttering up your shelves and donate them to the Monte Vista Library. We'd love to have all the books your family has outgrown - as long as they are in okay shape and age appropriate (preschool-6th grade). We will either use them in our library or sell them at our year-end book sale. This book sale is our main source of funding to buy new books each year. Boxes/bags of books can be dropped off in the office.WISH LIST/DONATIONS
It is definitely allergy season!!! The classrooms and health office will greatly appreciate and accept donations of Kleenex Tissue Boxes & Wipes (Bleach Free). Thank you!!!
Tdap (Whooping Cough) boosters are a requirement to enter 7th grade, including Summer School! If your child has already had this booster, please send an updated immunization record to Ms. Stephanie via email, sallen@gusd.net. If your child has not had this booster yet, please schedule an appointment with their physician as soon as possible.
CAL KIDS SAVINGS ACCOUNTS
The State of California has a new program called CalKIDS that automatically creates college savings accounts for eligible low-income public school students enrolled in first through 12th grade. CalKIDS will deposit between $500 to $1500 in each CalKIDS account and eligible students will be able to use this money for qualified expenses when they enroll at an eligible education institution.

DEI UPDATE | CELEBRATING AAPI HERITAGE MONTH
MAY: Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
AAPI Heritage Month is celebrated annually in May to recognize the contributions and influence of Asian and Pacific Islander people and communities in the United States. It can also be called Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. A similar celebration happens in Canada as Asian Heritage Month. This observance is a time to acknowledge the significant impact that AAPI individuals have had on the social, cultural, history, and economic fabric of the nation.
The national theme for AAPI Heritage Month 2023 is “Advancing Leaders Through Opportunity”.
In 1977 the U.S. Congress (spearheaded by Representative Frank Horton of New York and Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawai'i) chose the first ten days of May to commemorate the history and contributions of Asian American communities here in the U.S. The week's observance became a month, the very month in which the first Japanese immigrants came to the U.S. in 1843. We also commemorate the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 as the majority of workers who laid those railroad tracks were Chinese immigrants. And that's why AANHPI Heritage Month is in May.
During Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, our Nation celebrates the diversity of cultures, breadth of achievement, and remarkable contributions of these communities; of brave immigrants who, motivated by the promise of possibilities, picked up their lives and found new homes here; of native peoples who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial; and of community leaders shaping a brighter future for us all. Throughout our history, they have represented the bigger story of who we are as Americans and embodied the truth that our diversity is our strength as a Nation.
