BAMS Staff Newsletter
December 8, 2013 - Volume 1, Issue 11
BAMS Staff,
On February 10th, we will be having a special assembly in the HS auditorium. The presentation will be about bullying and our speaker will be John Halligan. John's son, Ryan, committed suicide due to bullying from peers. You can find out more about his story at http://www.ryansstory.org. John will also be doing a parent presentation for our community on the night of February 9th. More info about this event will be coming in the near future.
Have a great week this week and let me know what I can do to help you positively impact our students.
Adam
Bessie Allen Middle School - SLO
By the end of the 2013-2014 school year, 100% of an identified population of struggling readers in 6th-8th grade will increase their Reading RIT score on the May MAP assessment.
At Grade Level Team meetings, we have been discussing some of the students for our building SLO. We have begun documentation for all of these students. I have begun to assess these students' reading abilities, which has lead to some purposeful discussions. In some cases, teams have decided to look at different students to receive reading support.

News and Notes
- Aesop (Automated Substitute Teacher System) - Hopefully you were able to review the document that Aaron sent out about the protocol for using Aesop. Please let the office know if you have any questions.
- Early Release - Our time this month will be spent working on several of our district initiatives. Melanie emailed the options out to all last week. I would also like everyone to find some time to print or reprint their handprint at the new location by the west entrance doors. Also, don't forget about our Christmas Dinner on this day. You can sign up for something to bring in the workroom.
- Please continue to have discussions with your team about doing routine fidelity checks with students iPads. This is a great way to maintain safety. The majority of our students are being safe and appropriate with their device. Don't forget to celebrate that fact, as well.
- Staffing Update - We currently have 12 applicants for our 7th grade math opening. The posting closes on December 16th and interviews will be held on December 19th. Thank you to Adam Micke, Todd Whittaker, Judy Jarvenpaa, and Connie Gross for being willing to be a part of the interview team. Ginne Harney, Sarah McDowell, and Linda Wodsedalek will also be helping by reviewing applicants. Thank you!
- If you haven't done so yet, please take a look at the ESCAP documents that Aaron had previously sent out. These documents outline how we will be compensated in the School District of NFDL.
- A special thank you to Damaris for working with our ELL families to plan a Cultural Night on December 13th. Damaris has been doing a great job advocating for our students and forming positive relationships with families. Thank you!
- Thank you again to Brandon Switz, Mikki Detert, Melissa Rahn, Todd Whittaker, Linda Wodsedalek, and Theresa Galligan for attending the disciplinary literacy workshop last week. Please speak with them or myself if you would like any of the materials from this training. Definitely, some really great ideas and thinking that I think can help us greatly as we think about improving literacy instruction in our building.
