As you’ve likely heard, schools across the country are grappling with questions around how to handle the impact of during-the-school-day student cell phone use on behavior, academics, and school culture. Research shows that kids and teens do better without access to their cell phones during the school day: when students don’t have access to their phones, they are more engaged both socially and academically. Access to smartphones, texts, and social media magnifies behaviors and attitudes that harm friendships and acceptance – key tenets of a healthy and joyful school. What counteracts the feelings of isolation that can be created by phone use? Students having face-to-face, in-person time with friends and classmates.

At BES, we’re committed to ensuring that each student feels deeply known and valued for who they are. We believe greatly in the importance of our shared community—face-to-face, together! We don’t allow cell phone use during the day because we believe that our students connecting with one another is vitally more important during school than students connecting to their phone. We also know that pursuing rigorous learning requires academic engagement and specific habits – and cell phones don’t support these habits.

Our policy may appear a little unusual compared to the expectations of other schools, but for us, it’s one clear example of how our commitment to students and families is different. Simply put, cell phones don’t support our school community’s connection and growth, so we don’t do it.

Over time, students do need to learn to manage technology and build healthy habits. We support building those habits through intentional approaches using 1-1 laptops for all of our Junior Raiders. This is one of the many strong and thoughtful commitments we’re proud of!

We ask that all students turn their cell phones off and put them in their backpacks when they arrive on campus and keep them there until the end of the school day.

If you have questions or want to speak further about this, please contact Principal Aderman taderman@frjusd.org

Parents and Guardians~ We would like to remind you that Pokemon cards are not allowed in school. Please note that Pokemon cards may not be traded at school and are not allowed in the classroom AND on the playground. If any child is found to be in possession of Pokemon cards, the cards will be confiscated and returned to a parent at an arranged meeting with the principal. They are causing disruption from learning and a lot of tears over unfair trades and/or damaged cards. Thank you for your understanding.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS!

Research shows that children whose parents/guardians/grandparents pitch in at school have a better attitude and higher academic achievement. And parents who participate in the classroom are better equipped to support their child's schoolwork. So even if your time is tight, squeezing in some school volunteer work can make all the difference in your family's school success!

Get Started

1. Call or write your child's teacher to ask how you can help. In addition to being a class parent who helps with special activities and serves as a point of contact with other students' families, there are other ways you can get involved. Most teachers will have ideas, including reading to the class, helping run small groups, setting up arts and crafts projects, filing and making copies, speaking at career day, etc.

If you work during the school day~ there are other ways you can help~ prepping packets from home, chaperoning field trips, donating snacks, helping organize class parties etc.

2. Come to the school office and fill out a volunteer form.

3. At this time, volunteers must be vaccinated or test weekly. You can test for free at school or from home. Contact taderman@frjusd.org

4. PTA is seeking volunteers for our spirit wear committee, track and field day, book fair, and our 2022-23 PTA Board. Next meeting is 3/16 at 5:30pm

5. School Site Council will be seeking volunteers for our 2022-23 Board.

6. 6th grade parents~ we have a promotion planning meeting on 3/16 at 6:15pm.

7. Yearbook Committee

8. Guest Speaker/Short Term~ do you have a special interest and want to share it with our Jr. Raiders? Call or email Principal Aderman.

Healthy Snack Donation Request

We are requesting healthy snacks to keep up our students' energy throughout our school day!

Childhood is a critical time for growth and development, and healthy snacks provide important nutrients that learners need to stay focused.

Having healthy snacks such as granola bars, fruit snacks, clementines, goldfish, crackers, and animal crackers, takis, string cheese, jerky etc. available to students will promote healthy nutritional habits.

These snacks may also make the difference in a focused child vs. one who is hungry and who is unable to concentrate and work. School is a place kids spend most of their time.

Help us provide them with snacks that will help power their brains and bodies for a great day of learning by sending in a snack donation with your child for their classroom!
