An Event Tonight for Monomoy Families

A letter from the Superintendent:

Dear Families:

I wanted to share with you an update in our district's search for an Interim Athletic Director. Despite being over a month into a new school year, we had over thirty applicants for the district's Interim Athletic Director. A hiring committee comprised of our middle and high school principals, a parent, a former athletic director, a community representative, a member of the faculty, and a coach interviewed the five top applicants. After consultation with the principals and meeting with finalists, I have selected Karen Guillemette as our district's Interim Athletic Director.

Karen was an accomplished high school and college athlete who earned a Master of Science in Physical Education from Bridgewater State University. She has coached Girls Lacrosse and Girls Soccer at the high school level for seventeen years, and while in graduate school was the Head Women's Soccer Coach at Wheelock College. For the past decade she has taught and coached at Bishop Fenwick High School in Peabody, Massachusetts. During this time, she has been honored on multiple occasions in the local papers as a Coach of the Year for both Varsity Girls Soccer and Varsity Girls Lacrosse, amassing over 100 wins with each of her teams. Mrs. Guillemette's primary role at Bishop Fenwick was that of a Health and Wellness teacher and Department Chair, and for the past seven years has also served as the school's Assistant Athletic Director.

Karen Guillemette will be finishing out this season with her soccer team, while spending several days on-site here at Monomoy in preparation for the middle school and high school winter athletic season. Until Mrs. Guillemette is with us "on Cape" full-time, Kathy Andrews, the former middle school Athletic Director, has been temporarily assigned to ensure that our student-athletes, coaches, and teams are well supported. Ms. Andrews will be in communication with Mrs. Guillmette during these few transitional weeks, after which, Ms. Andrews will return as a physical education teacher at our middle school. Ms. Andrews will continue to coach field hockey at the middle school during this transition.

To have stability in our athletic program, I have given Karen Guillemette an interim contract through June of 2018. I am quite confident that her background and enthusiasm will serve us well for the next 20 months and hopefully long beyond that.

On a related note, tonight the Monomoy Sports Booster Club will be meeting at 6:30 PM in the high school library. I'd encourage any parent interested in supporting our middle and high school interscholastic athletic programs to come to the Boosters meeting and join this new organization. We need your support to complete the concession stand building at the high school stadium, along with other projects aimed at improving the athletic program for our student-athletes.

Please join me in welcoming Karen Guillemette to our community, and please come to tonight's Booster Club meeting.

Go Sharks.

Halloween Happenings

Please join our community in celebrating fall with several events on September 28th. The evening will be led by the Grand Marshall, Ms. Middleton, with a costume parade through downtown. Directly after the parade, bring your beach chairs or picnic blankets, as there will be a free, all CES community cookout. Finally, the PTO will host their annual Monster Mash event. Please see above flyer for more details.

A special thank you goes out to Theresa Malone and Monomoy Community Services for spearheading this event. There have also been generous donations from the Wayside and the Village Market for hamburgers and hot dogs. The PTO will be having a bake sale to fund raise for their organization. Your chefs for the evening will be volunteers from the Chatham Fire Department and from a collection of our retired teachers. Thank you to all!

Thank you to the Chatham Police Association! They donated the water bottles/juice boxes, condiments, and paper goods. Thank you!

Chomper and Other SHARKS in Ms. Mattson's Classroom

Miss Mattson's kindergarten class had Chomper the Shark in our classroom this week! The children got to play with him while he was here. He traveled with us around the classroom, including visiting us during math centers, during buddy reading and he walked with us down the hall to dismissal. It was so special to have him in our classroom.

PBIS Expectations

Today, our students and staff celebrated our second all-community event of the year. The theme for this assembly was on the SHARK expectation of "accepting." The student council, led by Lir and Ashleigh, hosted this event. Students performed a reader's theater skit from Recess Queen, a picture book written by Alexis O'Neill and illustrated by Laura Huliska-Beith. To see the reader's theater, click here: CES Reader's Theater Recess Queen. For an online reading of this book, click here: Recess Queen. A copy of this book will be provided to each homeroom so that classrooms can continue the discussions of what makes a good friend, and how do we include vs. exclude others. In addition, the CES buddy bench was unveiled. Students watched an informative video on the purpose of the buddy bench, and the bench will be placed outside on the playground. The classrooms were challenged to use today's events to generate a quote to place on the bench and around the school, so that all of our community, our students and our visitors alike, will understand the purpose and meaning of being accepting of others.

King and Mattson's Classroom News:

This week Mrs. King's and Ms. Mattson's classes began their adventures with Jack and Annie in the Magic Tree House. For the remainder of our school year we will be traveling through time and space with Jack and Annie as they discover and explore different lands, customs and historical events. In our first book, Dinosaurs Before Dark, we learned that the characters Jack and Annie will be in all of our books. They discover a magical tree house in the woods of their home town, Frog Creek Pennsylvania. Inside the tree house they find a vast collection of books and happen upon one book about dinosaurs. Jack looks through the book and wishes that he could see a real dinosaur. After he makes the wish the wind begins to blow and the tree house starts to spin. Then everything is still....absolutely still! It is then that Jack and Annie see that they have traveled back to the Cretaceous period in time when dinosaurs roamed the earth. It has been quite an adventure this week!!

Each class has made Jack and Annie and their tree house. They are proudly displayed in our classrooms!
