Student Scoop
- Congrats to Ella M. and her staff on starting a newspaper for our school, The Frankfort Tribune. Click here to read the first issue, and here to read the latest!
- Congrats to the 2018-19 Y Club Executive Board: President Audrey G, VP Eli C., Secretary/Treasurer Jaleia H., Service Chair Campbell S., and Public Relations Chair Sam G. Executive Board meeting this Wednesday in my room after school!
- Are you interested in connecting with a student in another country? When I was in school, I participated in the International Pen Friend program and enjoyed learning about Sigrid, a girl my same age who lived in Austria. I would love to facilitate this program for students in grades 4 and up. It costs $5.50 per student to apply (minimum of 10 students). See me before May 4 for an application!
- Nominate a teacher who does a great job meeting the needs of gifted kids in his/her classroom. They will get a small token of our appreciation and we'll share your kind words in an upcoming newsletter. (Parents can nominate, too!)
- Check out the bottom of the newsletter for lots of exciting opportunities for young people below.

Art Opportunity for All Ages
I wanted to make you aware of a couple of opportunities for folks of all ages to expand their art abilities. Art by Marcia offers drawing and painting classes at Michael's in Frankfort. White Cat Studio also offers a variety of different classes.
- I am considering offering a free Academic Team camp this summer. Let me know if your rising 4th-8th grader might be interested.
- See below for a flyer about Summer Camps at the Aviation Museum of Kentucky.
- Camp Artyfact at the Kentucky Historical Society is always a huge hit!
- Budding actors might enjoy Camp Shakespeare or Summer Academy at Woodford Theatre.
- LexFun4Kids has a great list of different camps in the central Kentucky area.

Historical Fiction Literary Analysis (4th-6th)
Last week, we read and analyzed "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus and learned about Ellis Island. This week, we will take a look at the poem "In Response to Executive Order 9066" and Japanese internment camps during WWII. We will analyze how the form of the poem impacts the reader and contrast it to the sonnet we looked at last week. We will also have time for silent reading and working on our reading logs.
Social Justice in Literature (7th/8th)
