Sort with magnetic letters
Have the child sort the letters by color, identifying each letter as they go along. This can be done on the refrigerator, in bowls, cookie sheets, or in piles on the floor! Challenge the child to not only identify the letter names, but the sound the letter makes as well.

Sight word review
- Build a Sight Word: Label popsicle sticks with the letters needed to build several sight words. Store these sticks in a bag marked with what words the child can build with that bag. Have your child pull out the bag, dump the sticks, then work to build and read each sight word.
- Paper Plate Toss: Write sight words on paper plates. Use them to throw like “frisbees” after reading the word.
- Word Hunt: Be a sight word detective! Look for targeted sight words in books, newspapers, or magazines. When using newspapers or magazines, have the child highlight or circle the words that they find.
Tech Tool
Duolingo ABC teaches young learners how to read through phonics, phonemic awareness, reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. Duolingo ABC's playful approach is built on learning science. The lessons feel more like a game than a textbook because learning is easier when you're having fun!
Seasonal Book Recommendations
These books can be found at your local library. Regular trips to the library help build a love of reading. Visit the nearest library branch to get your child their very own library card!
