Communication & Collaboration!
New tools to enhance our 9th grade English classrooms!
These three tools will be used this year by our 9th grade students to help enhance their overall learning experience by creating different channels for parent/student/teacher communication, as well as giving students different platforms to share their ideas on.
Diigo
This online resource allows students to to personally annotate any online text and share it with their peers. This will be useful when we cover Shakespeare in the spring because it will allow students to consolidate and share their annotations. Students can create groups for collaborative projects and easy note sharing. Also, this application can used with a computer or with a mobile phone, thus increasing portability and ease of access.
Moodle
This multifaceted platform is a place for teachers to create online learning experiences for students as well as channels of communication with other teachers and students from around the world. Students are a part of an online classroom and progress and participation can be closely monitored by the teacher. Teachers can pull from many diverse resources contributed by communities and students can learn and collaborate in a safe, private environment. The 9th grade teachers will all be using this platform to share videos and other resources.
Edmodo
Like Moodle, Edmodo creates an online classroom environment for students to broadcast their ideas to. Students can read and critique each other's work, allowing for more than just traditional teacher-to-student instruction. Students are given the opportunity to learn and teach one another in a safe and constructive environment. Parents can also be a part of the online classroom which creates an easier channel for communication between teachers and parents. We will be utilizing this site to keep parents up to date on exactly what their students are doing in class.
These tools are guaranteed to enhance your child's learning experience!
Why so much technology?
All of these tools create easier, more accessible forms of communication between the teacher, the students, and the parents. It gives students a chance to share their ideas with their peers in secure environments and it gives teachers the opportunity to consolidate their students' work into one easy to use format. It also gives the parents an opportunity to keep tabs on their student's progress. Overall, it makes the classroom more accessible and more open for all involved.
