What Do Great Trainers and Cheerleaders Do?
Today and tomorrow mark the end of the NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament. It has been exciting watching the ups and downs of the teams. So many people contribute to the success of the players. Today, we will consider how trainers and cheerleaders might be like the roles we play as teachers and parents in the lives of our children. 1. Great trainers help players stay healthy. They encourage athletes to hydrate and eat well. They assist in preventing and rehabilitating injuries. They remind players to stretch, warm up and cool down. They "train" young men and women to care for their bodies. Little ones struggle with this. Inherently, they don't know how much they need to sleep or what food to eat. They are not always mindful of what they need to do to keep themselves (and others) safe. They need our guidance to help them make healthy choices so they can care of their bodies for a lifetime. Self-care habits (both good and bad) begin early in life and have major repercussions as we grow older. In addition, good physical health has a huge positive impact on students' learning and mental health. 2. Great cheerleaders encourage players whether they are winning or losing. You can always hear and see them during games. They yell constantly and clearly. Because they coordinate communicating a common message, they are heard above all the other noise. They cheer when no one else is cheering. Our children need this kind of encouragement as well. We want them to know we are for them even when their performance isn't good. Kids need to hear supportive, clear and consistent messages so that when they "play away" from us, they can recall and apply our advice to make good decisions. We want to always be there on the sidelines or in the stands cheering them on. Hopefully, they will hear our voice above all others. Trainers and cheerleaders definitely help players succeed on the court. They are unsung heroes who seldom hold the trophy or cut down the nets. Let's pause to evaluate our actions as parents and teachers in these two areas and help keep our children safe and encouraged. Those efforts will make a lifelong difference in our kids.
Strength and Blessings to You,
Mr. Maness
P.S. Enjoy your time with your family this week on Spring Break.
