COVID/Health Updates

WLCSD COVID-19 Mask Update from Superintendent Gutman - Feb. 27

Dear WLCSD Families:

Welcome back from what we hope was a restful and enjoyable Mid-Winter Break. As we prepare to welcome students and staff back into our buildings on Monday, February 28, please find reminders and updates below.

As you know, earlier this month the Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) announced they will be rescinding their Emergency Order for Pandemic Control (2021-1) from August 2021 which required schools to implement universal masking. This change will take effect on Monday, February 28, 2022.

As the OCHD has determined that universal mask wearing is no longer necessary in schools, effective Monday, February 28, the Walled Lake Consolidated School District (WLCSD) will no longer require universal mask wearing in our school buildings and offices.

Please review the following information related to this update:

  • Isolation/Quarantine - At this time, OCHD’s isolation guidelines will still be in effect despite the change in masking requirements. COVID-19 positive students and staff will still need to isolate themselves for the minimum five days.
    • Asymptomatic students and staff and those that are exhibiting an improvement in symptoms will have the ability to return to school on days six through 10 of the isolation period provided the individual wears a mask during that time period. If mask wearing is not an option, that individual must isolate for the full 10 days before returning to school.
    • Symptomatic students and staff who are not showing an improvement in symptoms will be required to continue isolating until that criteria is met, possibly up to and including day 10.
  • Transportation - In accordance with recent updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), universal masking will no longer be required on school buses.
  • Head Start classrooms - In accordance with federal requirements, students and staff in our District’s Head Start classrooms must continue to wear a mask. This program is federally funded and thus subject to federal masking requirements.
  • Performing Arts/Athletics - As part of the lifted mask requirements, students involved in performing arts and athletics are no longer subject to the previous mask requirements associated with these activities.
  • Rentals/Community Education - Outside groups and programs are no longer subject to the masking requirements formerly associated with utilizing our school buildings and facilities following this lifted requirement.

Individual decisions related to continued masking in WLCSD will be left to the discretion of students, families, and staff members.

It should be noted that any bullying, harassment, or discrimination related to a student’s masking choices will NOT be tolerated. Any individuals engaging in such acts will be subject to the Code of Conduct.

Enjoy your last day of break and we will look forward to seeing students and staff in our learning spaces starting on February 28.

Sincerely,

Kenneth Gutman
Superintendent of Schools
Walled Lake Schools

Mask Video

On Monday, 2/28, students will be watching brief video announcement from Mrs. Johnson. In this video, Mrs. Johnson shares that beginning Monday, 2/28, masks are recommended but no longer required. We want students to know that this is a personal decision that students will make in collaboration with their families at home and that it is critical to respect one another, no matter what their choice is! The video is linked if you wish to reference.

***An important note about masks: Staff cannot accommodate any parent requests to have their students sit or partner with other students making their same masking choice. We respect that this is a sensitive issue but honoring requests of this kind is simply not feasible. Thank you for understanding.

Drinking Fountains

All drinking fountains will be open for use when we return from mid-winter break on February 28. All fountains were flushed over break and filters changed where necessary.

January/February i-Ready Dash Challege: Results Are In!

Students were encouraged to participate in a two-week i-Ready sprint, engaging in lessons the week before the diagnostic opened and the week after it closed.

Congrats to Kindergarten who took 1st place in reading, collectively passing 239 reading lessons over the 2 week challenge period!

Congrats to 1st grade who took 1st place in math, collectively passing 208 math lessons over the 2 week challenge period!

Both grade levels have earned a 30 minute bonus recess with Mrs. Johnson and Romeo! This recess will be coordinated and scheduled at a later date.

March i-Ready School-Wide Challenge

We are ready to march into our next i-Ready Challenge at Glengary and continue to build excitement around this district-wide program that is used to assess students’ academic levels and enrich and supplement instruction.

At the front of the building, we have put together a large bulliten board entitled,

Gnomies and I Are Ready to MARCH Into Our Lessons. Each grade-level will have a gnome labeled with their grade and they will earn 1 coin for every 10 i-Ready lessons passed in their class. Lessons will be tallied each week and a bar graph of coins displayed to show grade-level progress.

March Theme:

Gnomies and I Are Ready to MARCH Into Our Lessons

March Competition Dates: Monday, February 28-Sunday, March 27

Week 1: 2/28/22 - 3/6/22 - Report totals on Monday 3/7/22

Week 2: 3/7/22 - 3/13/22- Report totals on Monday 3/14/22

Week 3: 3/14/22 - 3/20/22- Report totals on Monday 3/21/22

Week 4: 3/21/22 - 3/27/22 - Report totals on Monday 3/28/22

Purpose: To increase student engagement with the i-Ready instructional lessons which target specific focus areas for each student based on their individualized fall diagnostic. i-Ready is research based and while it does not replace the core, quality instruction happening in the classroom, it certainly serves as a great way to close gaps and enrich our learners that are ready for the next challenge.

Competition Focus: Each grade will earn 1 coin for every 10 lessons passed.

Prize: Bonus 30 minute recess with Mrs. Johnson and Romeo!

How Can you Help?

Encourage students to take their i-Ready lessons seriously. Teachers will do their best to ensure students have the appropriate number of minutes built into their weekly schedule to complete the recommended number of minutes per week at school (30 minutes for K and 45 minutes for grades 1-5). If students have not been able to complete the recommended amount of time on their i-Ready lessons at school, please encourage them to complete them at home if possible. Unfortunately, at this time, we do not have Chromebooks available to send home with students.

Volunteers at Glengary

In the fall, WLCSD Parent Update shared that volunteers would be permitted on a limited basis and to look for a communication plan from the building principal. While we are very excited to see volunteers back in our school, we still need to have a thoughtful plan that does not jeopardize our efforts to keep our community healthy and our students in school. Please note the following details regarding volunteering during the school day:
Big picture
IMPORTANT: Each teacher utilizes volunteers in a different way. Some teachers do not have frequent volunteers. Other teachers use volunteers on a weekly basis. Please respect each teacher’s approach to volunteering and wait for them to share information with parents about volunteer opportunities. Even if your child’s teacher does not request classroom volunteers, there will be many other opportunities. Note: Volunteering in our school is different from visitors/spectators at events during the school day. Visitors or spectators at events during the school day are not permitted at this time.

Thank you for your partnership and understanding as we work thoughtfully to ensure the safety of all.

*Note: Please look for an upcoming communication regarding how Room Parents will be handled during the 21-22 school year.
