Mrs. Macey's 4th Grade Class
What We're Learning
We are in the midst of learning all things GEOMETRY. This unit is particularly challenging for fourth graders because of all of the new terminology. The skills in this unit are brand new to fourth graders so it takes them a few weeks to master them. Any extra review at home with the words would be very beneficial! Students have a geometry vocab packet that they could take home to help them study.
December was filled with reading mysteries and right before break we jumped into reading Rules by Cynthia Lord. While reading Rules, students are learning how to be a functioning member of a book club group. The groups create their own reading assignments and make sure that their group members come prepared to learn each day. At the end of January, we will begin to study historical fiction as we jump into historical fiction book clubs!
The fourth graders have been working hard on their personal essays. This week we are publishing our essays and will begin a persuasive piece. The main areas we are focusing on for essay writing are:
- Five complete paragraphs
- Interesting introduction and conclusion paragraphs
- Paragraphs with at least five sentences (topic sentence, three details, and a conclusion sentence)
- Using transition words like "In addition, For example, To summarize..."
Science and Social Studies
We are in the middle of our animal unit in science. Since it is such a large unit, the unit is broken down into three chapters. We will have our Chapter 2 test on Friday. Students will be taking home a study guide with key vocabulary and points to study.
Other News and Reminders
Spelling Bee Champion
Our very own Sawyer Chapman finished in the top 3 for our Tanglewood Spelling Bee! Sawyer, as well as two fifth graders Sophia Belden and Aiman Irfan, will be attending the Capital Region Spelling Bee on February 7th. Way to go, Sawyer!
We will try to go outside every day for the month of January as long as the weather cooperates! Please send in snow gear each day. If you child is in chorus (Tuesdays) or orchestra (Thursdays) your child will not need to bring their snow gear on those days as recess is during that time.
