Lisbon Gratitude
One important aspect of creating a caring community is to take time to express gratitude. While the past three weeks may have been challenging, we can look at the start of school and declare there were so many successful moments. I want to express my gratitude to the many people who contributed to the successful reopening of LES! A huge shout-out goes to...
- Our amazing families for their support, patience, and flexibility!
- Our custodial team, Ms. Smith, Ms. Brigandi, & Ms. Kamara for hustling to keep the school clean and looking fabulous!
- Our front office staff, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Drews, for the myriad of tasks they do to manage our school office and their care and attention to students and families.
- Our teachers spent SO much time setting up welcoming classroom environments and greeting new students with a supportive and welcoming smile.
- Our school nurse, Mrs. Williams, and our health assistant, Mrs. Lawhorn continue to care for our students when they are ill and managing the procedures related to COVID and contact tracing.
- Our counselors, service providers, technology department, and paraprofessionals for always being there to help wherever they are needed.
- Our incredible PTA who helps contribute to enhancing our school community.
- And...Assistant Principal, Ms. Wright, who worked tirelessly and has done such an excellent job preparing for the opening of school (arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, buses, testing schedules, etc.).
We have so much to be grateful for in our Lisbon community. I recommend focusing on all of the good things that take place each day. I recommend asking your child, "What were three good things that happened in school today?" Recent studies indicate that gratitude practices like talking about three positive experiences in school can actually improve your physical and mental health.
Thank you for your continued support!
Mrs. Anoff, Principal

NEW INFORMATION
Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15 to October 15 is celebrated nationwide as National Hispanic Heritage Month. It traditionally honors the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans as we celebrate heritage rooted in all Latin American countries. During this month and throughout the year, we, and our partners, share history, heritage, and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latino Americans of past and present.
Hispanic refers to a person who is from, or a descendant of someone who is from, a Spanish-speaking country.
Latino/a or Latinx refers to a person who is from, or a descendant of someone who is from, a country in Latin America.
Referenced from hispanicheritagemonth.gov
This month we will be exploring Hispanic Heritage Month through a variety of ways during our Morning Circles with the use of greetings, through rich literature by authors who are Hispanic or Latino, and/or through writing.

GRADE LEVEL INSTRUCTIONAL PACKETS
The HCPSS Curricular Office created choice board packets for each grade level (kindergarten through fifth grade) to include content-specific instructional activities to help keep students intellectually active while at home when schools are closed for inclement weather, during quarantine, or other unexpected events.
The tasks that students complete at home will not be used for assessment purposes or counted as part of the students’ grades. Each instructional area included has a “choice board” of task options. During each day of quarantine or when we are closed for inclement weather, students should select and complete a variety of tasks from each instructional area “choice board”.
We wanted to ensure you had access to these choice boards; however, in the event your child has to quarantine, we will send a more robust packet home that is specific to your child's grade level.

REPORTING ABSENCES

Welcome to our returning and new families. Mrs. O’Connor and Mr. Nath, G/T Resource Teachers, are looking forward to a great school year with your children!

To find out how, please join us on Wednesday, September 22nd from 5:30-6:15 p.m. in the LES cafeteria for a brief G/T Parent Information Night. ALL parents are invited and encouraged to attend. This session is especially valuable for families new to HCPSS or the Lisbon community. We hope to see you there; however, if you are unable to attend, the presentation slides will be available on the Lisbon Elementary School website. In the meantime, please visit http://www.hcpss.org/academics/gifted-and-talented/ for information about the Gifted and Talented Education Program. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. O’Connor at Jodi_OConnor@hcpss.org or Mr. Nath at Anjan_Nath@hcpss.org or call 410-313-5506.

Instructional Seminars are small, interest-based groups that meet with a G/T Resource Teacher approximately once a week during recess. The duration of the Instructional Seminar varies based on the topic and may range from a few weeks to a few months to all year long. Students may participate in more than one Instructional Seminar during the year.
Instructional Seminar titles are listed below. To participate, click on the accompanying link that will take you to a sign up form. These links will also be available for your child on the Team Canvas page.

Additional seminars may be added throughout the year as others are completed. These will be advertised to all students and shared in a similar manner with families.
*Note that students who participate in band or strings may still participate in an Instructional Seminar. Should there be an occasional conflict, students are asked to attend band or strings rather than the Instructional Seminar that day.
Please ask your child about their interest in the Instructional Seminars presented. Though we appreciate parents encouraging their children to apply to participate, we have learned that the students who are most successful are those who truly have an interest in or a passion for the topic. If you have further questions, please contact a G/T Resource Teacher: AJ Nath at Anjan_Nath@hcpss.org or Jodi O’Connor at Jodi_OConnor@hcpss.org. Thank you.
