The Cannon Connection

Staff Information & Updates 11/11/13

From The Principal's Pen...

The next two weeks are sure to be a busy!! It's hard to believe that we will be leaving for Thanksgiving break in only 10 days!! During the next two weeks, we will be welcoming several visitors to Cannon, including parents for Family STEM Night, district administrators for campus walk-throughs, and district personnel from Irving ISD and Round Rock ISD who will be visiting to learn more about our 1:1 and STEM initiatives. It is so exciting that others are coming to Cannon to see the great work that is being accomplished every day with our scholars!

I had the awesome opportunity to go to Apple Inc., in Cupertino California last week, with several district administrators for an executive briefing. In this setting, we had the opportunity to learn, but also to share all of the great work going on at our campuses and they commented that our work rivals that of some of the most progressive campuses they work with across the nation!

Kudos to all of you for your hard work to pursue excellence and provide the ultimate educational experience that ALL of our Cannon Cubs deserve! Have a great week! :)

REMINDERS & UPDATES

  • FAMILY STEM NIGHT- Please make plans to wear your STEM shirts with jeans on Family STEM Night on Thursday! Don't forget to post reminders about this fun evening on your blogs, websites, and newsletters. A flyer will be sent home with all scholars in Monday folders and a reminder will be delivered through School Messenger. Be sure to remind parents that the Book Fair will be open throughout the evening, beginning at 5:30. We are looking forward to a fun-filled, interactive family night! Thank you for all of your hard work to prepare for this evening event!
  • STEM LEADERSHIP TEAM WORKS ON SCHOOL CULTURE - At our last STEM Leadership Team meeting, several great ideas were generated that will be utilized to help to support a "culture of STEM" across the building. Ideas included creating street signs for each hallway with STEM-related names, designing posters of STEM Habits of Mind to be posted throughout the building, and creating an engineer showcase area, where definitions/examples of various types of engineers will be featured, alongside Cannon scholar work that matches these types of engineering examples. Stay tuned for exciting changes ahead!
  • SPRING CREEK NIGHT @ CANNON - PTA will host our first Spring Creek Spirit Night of the year on Wednesday, 11/13, from 5:00-9:00. Please encourage your scholars and families to attend, as the restaurant donates a generous percentage of all sales from the evening directly to our school. Hope to see you there!
  • iPAD UPDATES - Please make sure you have updated your own iPad to the iOS7 operating system, according to the directions sent out by Trisha through email last week. If your scholars did not update their devices over the weekend, please make sure you have them do this as soon as possible. It is critical that scholars follow the directions carefully when updating and that they do NOT create a passcode. If a pass code was created during the update process, it is vital that the children and teachers know their pass codes. If you have any questions about this process, please consult Trisha.
  • NEWS FROM GCISD - In case you haven't had time to keep up with news from around the district, there are several new exciting projects in the works! Beginning in the fall of 2014, GCISD will partner with Tarrant County College Northeast Campus to provide a program, known as Early College High School. In this program, students will actually attend classes at TCC, beginning in their 9th grade year. They will take coursework to complete high school and college requirements simultaneously, which will allow students to have 2 years of college credit earned, by the time they complete high school! GCISD high schools will also transition to a new course scheduling system called Arena Scheduling soon. This system will allow students to have more control over their schedules and they can create their own schedules, similar to systems used in college.

KUDOS TO JULEE & MEGAN!

Hats off to Julee Vorachard for being selected by Dr. Ryan to be featured in a video that will be used in his upcoming community presentations. The video will spotlight all of the areas of LEAD 2021 being implemented across the district. Congrats Julee!!

As a result of her awesome presentation at TCEA's Region 10 Conference last week, Megan Pettit has been asked to be a guest presenter for an area TCEA instructional technology specialists regional meeting this week at the PDEC. She will be showcasing her presentation, Blogging in the Primary Classroom. Good luck Megan!! Awesome!
